Ponder should have got more than two throws. Starters playing one series is dumb, especially if they aren't proven. Ponder should have played a quarter, Cassel should have played a quarter, and then you can let the scrubs clean up in the second half. Otherwise don't bother.

Sucks to see Dan Wiederer leave for Chicago, especially after losing Tom Pelissero to USA Today. Both were good beat writers. We'll probably get another year of absolutely nothing out of Chip Scoggins and then more smarmy troll jobs by Souhan and Reusse.

And it's still amazing that we've got Russo in town. They must be paying him a ton to keep him around.

I miss Pelissero every day. Going to miss him more when he's not doing the position breakdowns after games.

And now Ben Goessling has left the PP! What's going on there?

I'm not gonna go through every comment here...

The 2 plays is not just about Ponder.

The Vikings have good reason to keep their #1 o-line off the field as much as possible in preseason. They are 100% intact from last season so there is no need to get them unnecessary hits in a preaseason game.

If you're going to take the O-line out, you're going to take the #1 QB and #1 RB out as well.

This likely had nothing to do with any perception of Ponder's ability on the Vikings' end, but in their desire to keep their offensive line fresh in advance of a long season.

The jury is still out on Ponder, it's way too early to tell if he's the guy or not... everybody needs to just relax.

There's a Kurt Warner joke in here.

ESPN just expanded its NFL stable to have beat writers for each team. It gives a and beat writers another option to write while newspapers slowly decline. 1500's website is in some ways the 3rd newspaper in town; ESPN might as well have expanded on that.

Too bad it means Goessling is heading to the Mothership because he's a nice guy (and is a hockey guy too - it's really what counts here). On the plus side, Sean Jensen is apparently replacing him and he did a great job covering the team during his first stint with the PioPress.

And yeah, we're really lucky with Russo. Don't know it is true but at one point he had more Twitter followers than any local writer, which is amazing for hockey. Kind of think that Russo having different outlets (guest-hosting KFAN, FSN spots) to do things helps with keeping him at the Strib instead of going national (how many national NHL writers are there?).

Here's the other thing, Ponder pretty much has practiced with the 1st team. How comfortable is he with the 2nd team offense? That line is pretty bad and he probably isn't as familiar with the receivers on the 2nd group as the 1st. Maybe Patterson?

Our third Canadian on the roster Saskatchewan native Andrew Albers has been probably the one bright spot on a rotten season this year so far. Great two-hit shut out complete game tonight. First complete game shutout in over a year for our starting rotation.

Such an odd pitching motion too.

The fact that it has been a year between complete game shutouts - or that Scott Diamond had it and has fallen a long way since then - sums up Minnesota's starting pitching this year.

Highest ERA for collective starting rotation in the entire MLB.

Morneau on waivers. Anyone care to defend the Twins organization?

They're a complete joke and deserve whatever they end up getting? Which will likely be a KC-quality basement dwelling team for the next 5+ years.

Oh, sorry, you said defend...

From what I understand and have read every player is shuttled through waivers so this isnt news. I rememebr this from last year when people made a big thing about Mauer on waivers it isnt a big deal at all

Exactly. This is revocable waivers. They can pull him back if they want, or, if no one claims him, they can make a trade with anyone. If he hadn't slumped before the deadline, he was likely gone then. But now he's hitting better, and he's cheaper as nearly a million bucks is off what he's owed for the rest of the year.

Still think this offseason they should explore options to move Mauer if given the chance.

Ah. So they plan on seeing if anyone takes him, and if so, they deal him for chump change I guess?

The only way to make a trade now is for a player to clear waivers or get claimed by a team and nobody on the Twins roster should be untouchable. I also dont think they are going to give him away either. Since the Twins dont have a replacement for him I wouldnt be surprised to see him back next year

We don't have anyone who could replace what he was. But I think Colabello could replace what he has become since the concussion. I'd take Morneau back, but at a severely reduced salary

Agree 100%.

What he could bring back in a trade would shave at least a year or two off the rebuild process this team has desperately needed for a couple seasons now.

Formality. Nearly every MLB player gets put through waivers this time of year, especially those in the final year of their contract. If he clears then the Twins are free to trade with any team and if he is claimed the Twins can work out a trade with the team claiming him or just pull him back.

It is just the way it works in MLB.

They may be able to get some good guys back, but they will never consider trading him IMO because of the PR hit. He is beloved and is one of us and the fans would HATE the Twins for doing it.

While I understand what you're saying, and I agree that it's the move they'll go with... That doesn't mean it's the best move for the team's long-term success.

It may not be, but the way this team is run, that's what they'll do, or not do in this case.

Did you want to over-analyze Ponder's one play? Here you go.

I have no idea how some people know this much about football. It's really impressive.
