Of course not this coming week. But it should at least be Cassel in there this coming week.

Freeman to sit on Sunday

From the article:

Quote:
Frazier said Ponder is "still our starter" if he's healthy and added that "Christian still has a bright future here with our football team," though he conceded "it may not look like that on the surface."
I'll definitely be watching on Sunday if they name Ponder the starter

I understand not starting freeman this week, but going with ponder over cassel is asinine. Spielman has moved on Leslie, you should too.

The Onion says "Vikings sign fourth backup quarterback."

That's all that really needs to be said.

ehh I still think they should ride ponder. imo cassel isn't going to get them to the playoffs so might as well let ponder try or just tank

Cassel isn't getting them to the playoffs? Ya. Because they were put in an 0-3 hole. By Ponder.

Uh. No. It wasn't just Ponder. It was the defense. That couldn't make a stop. The only way the defense can make a stop is by forcing a turnover.

The Vikings made Brian Hoyer look like a legitimate starting QB.

Here's some fun facts (the higher the number, the worst it is. So 30th is best, 1st is terrible):

Minnesota is ranked 4th (and with one less game) in points allowed with 30.8. Only New York, Jacksonville and Philadelphia allowed more.

Yards per game? Minnesota is third and has allowed 430.8 yards per game.

Offense?

Minnesota is 5th in points with 28.8 (some of these points are coming from the defense).

Minnesota is 15th in yards per game with 350.6

Minnesota is 11th in yards per play at 5.7

And they are winning the turnover ratio by +2

The offense isn't exactly the problem. They are putting up points both defensively and offensively. What they aren't doing is stopping other teams from putting up points. It's hard to win games when you have to put up 40 points.

The defense is out there twice as long when Ponder plays. So compare those stats against other teams around week 8.

The defense might be bad, but when Ponder literally personally gives the ball to the other team on each of the last several scoring drives to give up the lead and then fail to retake it, it is his fault the game is lost.

I'd be the happiest if Ponder would continue to play. Gives the team the best chance to lose every week.

Liked Freeman coming out, but not too sure how much he's going to show at the QB position coming to a new team during the year. The last thing you want to accomplish moving into next offseason is being unsure if you have a starting QB on this roster or not. The answer has to be a definite yes or no.

Exactly. Look at time of possession. Look at the takeaways. Sure, the defense has problems, but you keep throwing them on the field, they will get more tired, they will get worse. The offense needs to keep drives alive and give the defense a rest. Convert third downs, chew up clock time. Don't let the other team keep getting the ball back over and over in the fourth quarter. And the defense needs to make timely stops as well, since they keep giving up TD's on those last drives. Cost two games and nearly a third until they got the turnover.

Special teams as well.

Ponder had 2 td passes and 5 picks through the first 3 games. That just doesn't cut it. If Ponder didn't have AP behind him, this offense wouldn't have been just bad, they would've been generationaly bad.

You can see that the team had no faith in Ponder, whatsoever.

I'm not saying the defense is blameless, but Ponder's inability to sustain drives by converting on 3rd down puts the defense back on the field with little rest is part of it as well.

The NFL is a QB driven league. If you don't have competent quarterback play, you have no chance in today's game....and Ponder has proven that he's not competent.

That looks bad until you realize 3 of the interceptions came from the first game. Peterson hasn't done much in those first 3 games.

18 attempts, 93 yards (with one run of 78...so 17 carries for 15 yards after his one long run). He did have three TDs that game but not many yards.

Against Chicago, 100 yards but ZERO TDs and 1 fumble

Against Cleveland he had 88 yards 1 TD and 1 fumble.

So, in one game Peterson had a good game and then two meh games, including a costly fumble.

And the defense failing to stop teams from converting first downs is also putting a lot of pressure on themselves. I mean we had Cassel in the game in London and we still almost ended up going to OT because our defense sucked.

And on the other side, defense needs to get to the QB or stop the pass, which Minnesota can't do.

BTW:

In Detroit: 23:41 (us) vs 36:19 (them) in time of possesion
In Chicago: 29:26 (us) vs 30:34 (them) in time of possession
In Cleveland: 28:52 (them) vs 31:08 (us) in time of possession
In Pittsburgh: 36:27 (them) vs 23:33 (us) in time of possession

The time of possession looks bad when you average them out but when you look at it individually, 1 game for Ponder (the first game) they got a significant amount of time more than the Vikings. 1 game for Cassel as well.

So, it's not all Ponder's fault. He had one game where it was sloppy. Cassel had the other. The other two, is almost even to us beating them in time of possession.

Report: Leslie Frazier didn't want Josh Freeman

If that's true, then Frazier probably thinks Ponder IS the starter if healthy . And he needs to go.

Hard to say...they are better now than they were under Brewster, but I don't think it's healthy for him to be the coach, for his sake and for the team. I don't know if that means his assistants take over or a whole new head coach...with new assistants...which reboots the recruiting and rebuilding process...
