I don't know if Gallagher should be ahead of Pleks but he definitely seemed to work on his skating quite a bit because he looks pretty good out there. Eller's probably ahead of Galchenyuk at the moment. Think I might have him ahead of Gallagher too.

Patches
Subban
Pleks
Eller
Gallagher
Galchenyuk

Could Briere still crack this list?

Patches is really fast, remember he won the fastest skater in 2011 in the Habs skill compilation, and I think in 2012 surprisingly DD won it I believe, never thought DD was a speedy player, but I guess he is.

He is gone now but man could Cole fly!!

People's inability to judge a players speed has always baffled me.

Gallagher is not fast as he is much closer to average and the same can be said for Galchenyuk.

Travis Moen has very good speed but you rarely hear fans mention it, and how Diaz's name hasn't come up yet is confounding. Gionta and Bourque are also easily faster than either of the Gally's .

I know people will reply that Moen is slow........if that is what they believe then it is a fact that they are incapable of a credible opinion on this topic.

My guess is that the two fastest players are Pacioretty and Plekanec. For those that think Subban is the fastest.....he just isn't. While Subban is a strong skater I would put money on Diaz beating him in a race.

It should be noted that the fastest skater event in the skills competition is a bit of a joke. The race is won and lost on the turn behind the net. It is a dangerous maneuver to try and go all out on that turn and most players err on the side of caution. For those who take the risk and a good line......they can put up a misleadingly high number in relation to their peers.

A real hockey race should be from the faceoff dot in one of the far zones to the furthest blueline. It is a straight line race that takes place in every hockey game unlike the around the net gimmick.

You could even go blueline to blueline to increase the importance of quickness.

Forgot about Bourque. Never got the Moen as being slow comments but I don't know if he's faster than the Gallys.

Galchenyuk once he got going was actually pretty fast. Gallagher's speed surprised this year.

I don't know if Gionta's lost a step or he just didn't get the opportunity to really use his speed last year but he didn't look as fast as he has in the past.

PK's powerful and shifty skating could confuse some (me included) that he's faster than he is but I still think when he gets going his speed is pretty special.

The problem with Galchenyuk is his first 3-5 steps and this is where most puck races are won and lost. People often mistake a players "top end speed" with his ability/willingness to either carry the puck at top speed or crash the boards on the forecheck......for the most part it is a myth.

In Galchenyuk's case he is very young and most kids his age require time to work on their first few steps....he will be fine.

Gallagher is basically full throttle all the time but I wouldn't mistake speed with hustle and a willingness to maintain body position.

As for Gionta, he probably has lost half a step but that would still leave him in the top 1/4 of the team in terms of speed.

Subban is a player who is very strong on his skates and is very agile. He really isn't that explosive however as he generally uses his upperbody to shield himself in order to gain separation. He plays the game fast though as he is always pushing the pace and he likes to handle the puck at top speed which is v ery impressive to watch but it doesn't necessarily make him fast. Don't get me wrong, I think Subban is a great skater but I have seen him lose many races to speedy forwards, fortunately he hangs in well enough to get back and take away their space.

Agree, but seeing how we rarely see some of the player in those of races in game situation expect maybe for wingers coming down the wing trying to beat dmen, we really don't have much to judge.

That's why I was surprised with DD speed

I think Carey Price is the fastest skater but there is blatant disregard in here for anyone playing the goalie position...

PLEKS.

Maxpac.

Subban.

DD may have won "fastest skater" but you have to look at who he was matched up against at the time. They usually only have 4 maybe 6 guys take part in that one?

I see game speed different then practice speed.
This year, me watching all games, overall my top speedster are:

Plekanec-he had jump in the neutral zone especially.

Patches-I put him second simply cause he had less jump this year then last. Still verry fast

Gionta-one many race and unfortunately, he lost many battle for the puck.

Eller-gotta say he was among the top at puck carrying speed.

Subban-solid first 2-3 stride. His speed come more from his ability to change direction and going from forward to backward. Still he may not be the fastest straight line.

PS:Come to think of it, the All-star game could have a skating sprint along with the full ice turn.

In order:

Pacioretty
Plekanec
Eller/Subban
Gionta

And Erik Cole was a beast his first year with us, man was that guy quick. And he was hitting everything too, I think he had a just impact on Pacioretty's game.

Man, it was just beautiful watching Cole power down the right wing like a rocket.

Gionta
Briere

Galchenyuk
Gallagher

Diaz
White

Tinordi

Really, REALLY surprised at the lack of reckognition towards Bourque. He's deceptively fast.

Not a bad list but Moen and Diaz are way too low.
