So here’s a fun little debate that some folks across Leafs Nation are sure to be having:

James Reimer or Jonathan Bernier: who’s “the guy”?

I think it'll be Bernier. Hope it's a battle though.

it's closer than i thought

I say Bernier, a close battle prior to a Reimer injury that takes him way to long to come back from, leaving Bernier as that #1.

Well they didn't pay Bernier $3M to be the backup.

Reimer would've gotten a similar contract if he had been an RFA this year

It's going to be a battle for sure. I hope that both have great years, one may be an extremely valuble trading asset at the deadline. I really like Reimer and want him to be our number one but he does have some weaknesses as many journalists have pointed out, truthfully i have yet to see enough of Bernier to make judgement.

I think the Leafs brass want it to be Bernier:

I don't know if you go out and trade for a guy and sign to a contract simply as an insurance plan. Bernier comes with a high pedigree tag and a reputation for technical proficiency that is kind of the opposite of Reimer, who is a no pedigree guy with great athletic ability who kind of excels as a bit of a battler, but also has systematic flaws. Maybe there are question marks as to how much he can actually keep improving.

Personally, if it weren't for the fact that Bernier is so small for a goalie, I'd be rooting for him too.

That said, I don't think management is opposed to the idea of Reimer becoming the guy either, and neither am I.

As do I, I won't be opposed to Reimer become the guy either per se, but I'll be a little let down I think. Bernier's a pedigree and sky high potential in my opinion, I seriously hope he can realize it here/

I think Reimer will start off as the #1 guy but will get outplayed by Bernier.

This season won't be long enough for Bernier to be the #1 so we'll see a 1A/1B situation like in Minny with Fernandez and Roloson.

Cool page. Helps with the "dog days of summer". Any Leafs read is good to me, but please get rid of the hideous looking girl on the right side of the page!

Jonathan Bernier will win it hands down as the guy imo.

Look at what Burke and now Nonis have done with this roster. We have the 1st round pics in Kessel, JVR, Dion, Lupul, Gardiner, Colborne and now Bernier to make up some years of "the Leafs have no 1st round picks".

reimer has been with the team, but bernier has the better results and stats so far in their careers...the goalie position u dont need team chemistry, so i would go with the results, plus bernier handles the puck a lot better, and i believe he has star potential

My gut tells me Bernier, but Reimer is one of those guys who seems built to defy odds. They should give us a lot of stability in net, something we haven't really had in ages.

Photo shop that immediately.

I believe management will start Reimer on the season opener as a reward for what he has done last year. I could see them alternating goalies for a while as well.

James mother****ing Reimer.

He's already put up better numbers on inferior teams.

With that in mind, other than draft position (which should be irrelevant now - they were both drafted 7 years ago, so this shouldn't matter any longer) I don't see how anyone could favour Bernier's body of work over Reimer's.

Better numbers on an inferior team means James Reimer is the better goaltender.

Not even sure why some debate this. Bernier has a ways to go to prove he is just as good as Reimer, and I personally dont think he will be. I'm happy to be wrong, but with his hobbit like size, and past performance shows Reimer to be the better goalie today, and likely in the future.
