Niskanen would probably be an upgrade for Spurgeon, but we can't add salary. Pens would need to take some salary back.

Aren't the Wild looking to shed salary?

I thought Niskanen would have been a good fit before the Ballard signing but now they have 7 or 8 d signed so Im not quite sure they need him. I would like some Wild fans to say where Nisky would stack up on their d depth chart

Non-starter...we're already over the cap. The Wild could move salary elsewhere.

Niskanen would be a great fit in Minnesota but no way the Pens take back salary for him. At this point its either a prospect, a pick or both.

Not bad value, but Phillips is too far away from being an productive NHLer for the Pens to actually go ahead.

Not sure Minny can afford, if they can I don't see why not since they are paper thin on D and have pretty good C depth. Fair value.

Why would that be an issue?

Good deal, Wild could probably move Rupp or Mitchell to get under the cap.

Ballard-Niskanen would be a good 2A pairing.

Yep. Seems like a good fit for the team and individual. He's from Minnesota. Won't be relied upon too heavily like in Dallas. And will have former Pens staff to work with.

I'd do it. Has Phillips being playing wing or centre for Houston?

Solid deal for both sides, but as it's been said Minnesota would need to shed salary elsewhere for it to happen. Phillips not being NHL-ready is hardly a drawback for the Penguins.

Center mostly, most of last season he was getting crap minutes though with the lockout and having Johan Larsson, Granlund and David McIntyre(token Vet) ahead of him on the depth chart. With bad minutes and not great linemates he struggled. Picked up his game towards the end with Larsson traded and Granlund often up with the big team.

Needs at minimum 1 more season in the AHL, decent chance 2 seasons.

Oh, this deal. . . . wow, where do I sign? Only problem is the Pens would either have to hold some of his salary or the Wild would need to send someone back to shed some salary.

Niskanen ($750k retained)

for

Phillips
2014 6th rounder

This would be much more doable. Then we could move Konopka or Prosser or Rupp and make room under the cap to leave some space for the injury call-ups. It is anyway essential to have ~1-2m space under the cap.

This move is the Pens shedding salary. Phillips for Niskinan is not a fair trade straight up, Its the added value in shedding cap space which is what makes it palatable for Pens fans.

Not really honestly. Next two candidates would be Orpik(cant see us moving him AND Niskanen) or Jokinen (would leave forward depth looking thin.

Glass wouldnt save much cap space at all but would gladly see him gone.

Niskanen is the Pens option to get under the cap. Anything bigger would hurt too much and anything smaller won't get the job done. The Penguins can't and won't swallow salary for him when that would take his cap off the books the same as what Tanner Glass makes, and at that point you just get rid of Glass and plug a Scrabbles in there. As much as I hate the little **** it's not like it's possible to be worse than Tanner Glass anyway. That and that still leaves the Penguins with 8 defensemen and about $600k left to shed to get under the cap...

It's unfortunate because I'd look for any reason to get rid of Glass, but Glass alone doesn't get the job done.

Yep Glass only really saves 600k ish when you figure he'll be replaced by a Scrabbles/Payerl.

I like that value a lot. I would definitely do this trade if I knew we could trade Spurgeon for a decent return. Matt Martin would look good in a Wild jersey, but I'm sure the Isle fans would not be as enthused.

The Wild have no need for Niskanen now.

Plus, I really wouldn't want to get rid of Phillips before seeing him as Iowa's full-time #1C.

Nope. Niskanen is our best option to get under the cap.

He's good and should net a solid return, and he's replaceable from within.
