2013 Islanders Prospect Poll #14

Prospect Criteria for the purposes of this poll mimics the ‘Hockey’s Future’ Prospect Criteria: If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.

My goal is to have these polls run for 48 hours each and to extend through the top 25 prospects as per hfboards.

(He's been labelled and dismissed by some already as well). But he went up 5 spots. WHY? Because most people didn't think he would sign.... AND THEN HE DID. Had nothing to do with his game that most read about and few had seen.
Of course he does. And why shouldn't he? For me, the uncertainty whether a player will be an Islander in the future or not is a valid factor when deciding who to vote for. Same with Ullstrom.

Finally Hickey is off the boards. Man..we are deep with talent. This doesn't even include players like Wetmore, Colin Mcdonald and any other pro not considered a rookie.

where are all the people vying for more Ullstrom in last year's playoffs, against the Pens? That same player who MANY thought would be an upgrade over Boyes on the top line are watching their guy at #13 on the prospect list, and likely worse?

As far as I can tell, the only difference is that he signed to play in Europe instead of a two-way contract and no guarantee of an NHL spot next year. So now he's a cast-off, like Petrov, even though the Islanders still retain his rights. I think he's still the same 6'3" 210 lbs speedster who scored 24 goals in the AHL, played pretty well for the Islanders in a limited role - FAR better than Nino Niederreiter did as an Islander.

And although Kevin Poulin is (likely) slated to start the team as the NYI back-up, in the NHL, he's not one of our top 13 prospects and not our top goaltending prospect - even though he's the same age as Nilsson and has shown more thus far in his career.

redbull, I think you're taking this too seriously (as some others are) but are making the correct observation. In polls like this, on Hockey's Future, you're going to see the youngest players heavily favored, even if it's just by a year or two. Location of where the player is playing is going to factor in as well, which is why Petrov and Ullstrom are still there. I'm not sure how you can blame anyone for that. If they're not playing in the organization, why should fans feel they will ever come back?

Then there is also the case where NHL experience is going to hurt prospects on this list, such as Hickey, Poulin, and Ullstrom. If you're not amazing right off the bat, if you don't appear to have elite potential, fans will not like what they see and they won't finish in the top 10. That's just how it works.

I don't see why any of this is a big deal. We are arguing over a ranking spot or two, after the public has voiced its opinion. To me, all along, this list has been about the absolutely outstanding prospect depth that the Islanders have. I think it is tops in the league. I couldn't care less if Thomas Hickey is ranked 13th but has a top 5 NHL career from this list, and if Anders Lee is ranked 8th but can never cut it at the NHL level. Let people vote, and move on. We have a lot of prospects to be happy about!
