Gretzky wouldn't be as effective in today's NHL. Note that i said "as effective" not "ineffective". I wouldn't trade a Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Giroux, Tavares type player for him straight up today.

He was 27 at the time. According to HF, he's only got a couple years left before he starts to decline and his contract will be an overpayment. Got any first round picks we can have instead?

Gardiner and Kadri would be close, but Toronto would probably say no.

Our entire franchise including Nonis and Carlyle. Hell, we'll even let Gretzky be our GM while he's playing

Good, cause no GM would ever trade Gretzky for any of those players straight up!

Gretzky would be the GOAT in any era. His vision and hockey IQ was off the charts.

Agreed. That's why his production didn't sag much even after he wasn't able to score as many goals.

Ridiculous. He would crush the league today to the tune of around 150-170 points. His vision and hockey IQ alone would be good for 100 assists every season.

If you were to compare the package given up in 1988 to players of today (and with inflation):

$29,550,000 USD
John Tavares
Ryan Strome
Three 1st Round Draft Picks

Jimmy Carson was a 55 goal scorer at 19. He scored 79 points as a rookie and followed up his sophomore season with 107 points. He was very highly regarded as a future top line center. That is until he was moved around and lost confidence in his abilities. Gelinas was a former 1st round pick, taken 7th overall.

Cash aside, think the Islanders would offer such a package for a Sidney Crosby?

From calgary
Baertschi, Monahan, Klimchuk, Gaudreau and the next 3 draft of flames picks lol

The 2013 equivalents of Jimmy Carson and Martin Gelinas, plus 1sts from 2013, 2015, and 2017.

Impossible to move today. The only reason he was traded in the first place was for the money, and you can't trade money anymore. Any team he's on instantly becomes a contender... there's no collection of players that would be "fair value".

Crosby + Malkin + Ovechkin + Stamkos....if they were all on the same team.

I think this would be my take on it, because of the cap world, if the oiler are ready to spend to the cap it would be hard to acquire a fair value in player for Gretzky.

IF Gretzky just make 10 millions a seasons, you have to acquire something that fit the cap, it is almost impossible.

Imagine you got 4 first rounder, 2014-2015-2017-2018 or something like this, by the time the 2018 one would be good (and stat wise what 30-40% of first rounder become revelant top-6/top-4defencemen/1goaltender nhler ?) the 2014 would be on a big contract if he is good.

The only possible think would be if it existed another special talent making sense team wise / marketing wise.

Like if your team had Mario and Wayne while Bobby Orr/Lindros was playing and your fan base wanted one of them. You can trade Wayne for Lindros+ or Bobby Orr, maybe ?

If not hard to fit a fair value under a cap world.

Ok that would be possible, you have 9.5 + 8.7 + 8.7 + 7.5 of your cap taken on a 64.3 salary cap and 30 millions left, but your big money are on real superstars that are worth it.

He played in an era where the average player was worse than the average player today and the goalies wore half the gear that they do today. Big difference even for Gretzky.

Yes, and that's exactly why he'd be scoring 150-170 points a year instead of 196-215. That's still about a 50 point difference, lol.

Send a message via ICQ to Captain Catatomic
RFA compensation says that Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Perry are all worth 4 first round draft picks each.. so think a little higher than 4 first for the great one.

People who say this never saw Gretzky play in his prime.

And if he played in this era he would hold himself to the modern standard when it comes to conditioning.

He might not put up the same number of points due to the tightness of today's game, but he'd still separate himself from the pack by a good margin.

Your argument is invalid.

If a GM were to call you and offer a 20 year old Gretzky you would take it no matter what he asked for.
