Ya, pretty much nailed it there at the end from what Ive been able to uncover about Ahearne; "A hostile witness". Essentially your prototypical mid 20th century Irish Hustler who saw hockey as a means to enrich himself. Not an altruistic bone in his body but a cloak he would don depending on circumstances. An opportunist. Nothing wrong with that per se', goes on everywhere to this day, just a lot more sophisticated. He did have some curious connections on this side of the pond. Belonged to something called the Eastern Arena Management Association (or something close to that name) that was based in NYC. Appears to have been a conglomeration or association of non-NHL city arena owners & managers with the exception of Adams in Boston. I cant find any solid inf on just what exactly this "association" was up to, its charter, mandate or purpose, nor why Ahearne would be a member of it.
