Max Lapierre Wanted to Re-sign with Habs

Jérémie Rainville ‏@RainvilleJR 2h

Jasette avec Max Lapierre ce matin. Avant de signer avec St-Louis, il a tout tenté pour revenir avec le @CanadiensMTL pas d'intéret du #CH

i would probably have signed him if he'd have accepted 4th line minutes. He's an upgrade over dumont, white or Halpern (returning)

Rainville works for RDS

It's ok, our PK was amazing last season, we ripped it up in face-offs and our defensive zone play was stellar. We didn't need to add someone like Lapierre.

Meh, like I said in the other thread where this was posted, I don't have a problem with bringing Lapierre back at some point, but I don't see a fit with us this year. Too many centres, too many bottom-sixers as it is, no room for him.

Prust - Lapierre - White would've been an awesome 4th line

Lapierre is average at best on the PK. He does bring some good elements on the ice, but I find him to be a selfish player that seeks out media attention. Plus he wasn't happy being a #4 center back then, why would he want to now?

Let me be clear, I'm no Lapierre advocate, I'm just still baffled how we didn't address any of those three needs in the off season. To me, they were far away, the biggest deficiencies on the club.

And unrelated to forwards:
Physicality on the back end.

Max Lapierre Wanted to Re-sign with Habs.....as a 3rd liner ? Or would he be willing to accept whatever ice time was given this time around?

Either way, that ship has sailed.

Prust-Lapierre-Parros would have been "entertaining". Lappy would get troll extra hard because Parros would scare off most retailiators.

But we got Briere instead and didn't have the space.

I would have gotten him back too. I don't think we have anyone better than him to play as the 4th line center on this team. Would have left us with:

Pacioretty - Desharnais - Gallagher
Bourque - Plekanec - Gionta
Galchenyuk - Eller - Briere
Moen - Lapierre - Prust

That being said, all things considered, I'm now sure there was enough room on our roster to do it at this point.

I always liked Lapierre. Too bad the team couldn't bring him back.

Exactly. We consistently have the same needs that never get addressed.

Very disappointed in MB this off-season, but it doesn't surprise me as I expected pretty much the same team coming back.

Lapierre isn't an upgrade on PK or defensive zone coverage. He is an energy player that can chip in a few points on offense and be adequate defensively.

Faceoffs he was 50.6%. Halpern was 54.5%, White 54.5% Dumont 63%

Unless you want him to replace Eller(49.3), I don't see where he fits and upgrades anything.

The PK is not a matter of missing one player. It's the whole freaking passive system we have to change. With all the speed we have, it's abnormal we didn't score a single short-handed goal this season.

Lapierre is average at best, slightly above-average on faceoffs.

Defensive zone coverage is made a lot harder by d-men by Markov, Gorges and Diaz who just won't win one on one along the boards, and who will let the offensive zone too easily to the opposing forwards.

Where I agree with you, is that we're certainly still missing physicality on the back-end, and we needed to address that. The Briere signing did not prevent us from doing so.

I'd bring back Halpern first.
I was using Lapierre as an example, not as a solution. White/Dumont are no solutions to our 4th line center, I see both as wingers, and I'm not comfortable with either of them taking on shut down duties against any line. I also don't think it's fair to completely tax Eller/Plekanec with defensive assignments, since both are better offensively than our "#1 Center" DD.

I'm not sure how anyone can talk about team toughness and getting bigger then say "yeah we should bring in Lapierre".

The Habs have been top 5 in PK the last few years. They dropped last year mostly because Price had a crappy year.

Faceoffs, Eller is the only regular under 50% at 49.3%, so unless you want to dump Eller for a faceoff specialist, the solution will have to come from him(improving his faceoff skills).

Defensive zone coverage we have a pile of guys better than Lapierre in Moen Prust Plekanec etc, Lapierre is hardly a shutdown guy or elite defensive center.

I'd rather give Dumont an extended look. Give him 50 games before looking outside. He brings spunk, energy and grit. Bournival will also be an option, possibly as soon as this year. Nattinen could also be an option if he can stay healthy.

Price had a crappy year because the PK was so bad. Not long ago, I showed the game highlights of the Habs-Devils game which showed exactly why our PK was so bad.

Price cannot stop high-slot deflections, cross-crease one-timers, and guys walking un-touched into the slot, all the time. Our PK was horrible and Price's sv% and GAA suffered because of it.

If you really want to go over all the goals we let in on our PK, you will see that it wasn't Price's fault, but the passive nature of the PK and the general disorganization they had on picking up the most threatening options on the PK.

You can't have Dumont as a shut down center. Bournival might be an option, but not this season, unless he has a remarkable progression. Dumont is way too small to contain some of the better centers down low and he's better off assuming a winger job where he hits, grinds, creates by being tenacious and fiesty.
