Mark McNeil

Always liked this player. Just wondering what it would take to acquire McNeil from the Hawks?

Probably a late first is his value, however the Hawks probably wouldn't trade him for that.

If I'm the hawks and I want to trade him, then I look to package him for a second line centre

If we decide to trade McNeill, I'd like to go after young defensive talent.

And by young defensive talent, you mean a 2C right with offensive and defensive upsides, right?

So would something based around Plekanec from Montreal be able to be worked out?

How do you expect to get a current 2C for a prospect who has played less than 10 AHL games and will likely become a 3C best-case scenario?

The Hawks would probably be thrilled to swap him for a second rounder

Hawks would have to add VERY signficant value to McNeil (aka - McNeil is a sweetner and not close to the most valuable asset in the deal) to get that type of deal done, and would have to send some salary to make it work cap wise as well. There is very little chance to make that type of deal work at this point IMO.

The Hawks don't need Plekanec....there's players in the system that need to be tried at #2 center and who fit with the cap better.

And I think McNeill's value has plummeted some since he was drafted. I don't think they could get a first for him anymore.

not really, Cap says no while Bowman wants to see what Pirri can do

for McNeill, I think the Hawks would accept a late 1st or a mobile Stay at home D prospect (not 1st pairing potential)

If someone gave us a late 1st for him i'd be thrilled. Our top 9 is currently, and in the future, overcrowded and I'm not particularly impressed by what he has to offer relative to his draft position and what we have in the system as of now (including Hartman).

Watched him twice this year...not impressed at all. he looked lost in the defensive zone and for a big kid looked very soft. Not sure he's worth even a 2nd rounder at this point, hopefully he figures it out.

I think he lost his #1 center spot to a slick young german player.

Based on his play over the last year or so, it seems like his ceiling is more bottom-6 than top-6. It may not even be at center. That said, because he's a power forward, and sometimes power forwards take a little longer for their game to catch up to their body, it's too early to know how good he can be. Where the other 1st rounder taken in that draft, Phillip Danault, improved last season over the previous season and seems to be a more certain NHL level player, McNeill's game kind of stagnated and that's playing as an older and often times bigger and stronger player than many of the guys he was playing with and against in the WHL.

I think McNeill is now in that grey area where the Hawks wouldn't be able to get as much for him as he could be worth, but if he doesn't pick up his game in the AHL this season, he will be worth even less at this time next year. For the Hawks, the cupboard isn't empty of prospects, so it makes sense to hang on to him and bet that he improves.

I'd rather see how he does his first year in the AHL than trade him now. He has good tools and could easily up his value after a solid rookie AHL campaign.

You people are crazy. Trading him for a 2nd rounder?

The guy is a potential power forward (take longer to develop), has the nastiness that all Hawk fans want in our line-up, and hasn't even played a year of pro hockey yet.

An interesting thread.

Rangers could be interested, could use more C depth; would like to do a vet salary for cap relief.

Here's a softball.

Wait for it

Wait for it.....

Any suggestions for a deal?

No. Because we invested like 10th overall for McI, and expect him here later this season. McN was never 10th overall value at best, certainly not now, and its one thing to get him late first early second value or alternate, another to give up value for him, and still another to give up value for area of need for NY.

Try again.

You don't watch many PA games do you? He is not a "nasty" player. He's big and hard to knock off the puck, but is not an aggressive player at all. He really hasn't improved his game at all since being drafted, and I actually think he has gotten slower. Reminds me of Kyle Chipchura

I just assume hold him and see if he develops as opposed to trading him when he has minimal value.

Does he at least look to be a good 3rd line centre, a poor 2nd line center ?
