Finally Spezza gets to shine.

I have said for a long time that Spezza should have been team captain a long time ago but not over Alfie. I think by having Alfie here all this time has stunted Spezza's growth as a leader on this team. Being drafted 2nd overall and going to a bad team would have probably resulted in Spezza being named captain about 5-6 years ago and learning how to improve his game based on the pressure alone.

With the Sens being Alfie's team we always looked to number 11 to get us out of trouble and Spezza was always seen as some one we wanted more out of.

Would Eric Stall or Jonathan Toews matured at the same rate playing behind Alfie?

Spezza's skill has always been one of the best on the team and Alfie benefited the most having him around.

I just see how Tavares, Toews, Getzlaf, and others have been part of the next wave of star centers in the league and always seem to be on team Canada's radar for Olympic consideration. We know how good Spezza is and by being a point a game player in his career he should have been more of a star rather than the side kick. Finishing 4th in scoring last year should of garnered more recognition imo.

Even to a degree with the emergence of Karlsson you can see the shift from Alfredsson and going right to #65, by passing Spezza.

Spezza has turned into a solid player who makes everyone around him better. He opens up time and space and is the most important player IMO.

I just hope the city shows Spezza some of the love they Showed Alfie and back him 100% even if he makes mistakes. To this point Karlsson can do no wrong and doesn't get any of the slack Spezza received early in his career.

Spezza needs to become one of the best centers in the league with only maybe Malkin and Crosby a head.

Lets hope Spezza truly takes the captaincy of this team and elevates it higher than it has ever been.

I never looked to Alfie to get the sens out of trouble. He was fine but I always liked Spezza clear cut above everyone else and still do.

Spezza doesn't need to be the best center in the league for us to be good. His game has been rounding out over the past few years and if we are gonna be contenders everyone around Spezza need to pull their weight.

I say Neil for captain, but Spezza is definently an under-appreciated player

Spezza is without a doubt the next captain IMO. He's at the perfect age to embrace it and potentially become an even better player out of it.

Really looking forward to seeing what he can do healthy with Ryan.

I 100% agree..., but worry his 'c' will be worn by an alternate 35% of the time when he's injured. I hope he's healthy for a good long stretch.

I'm on the Neil for captain train tooNothing say captain like breaking another guys nose.
But really i think the Alternates perfectly fit Neil and Phillips. Spezza is the new face of the franchise and we should establish him as the official leader for years to come.

Choosing anyone else for captain is a slap in the face to Spezza imo.

Neil is a huge part of the leadership and from everything i've heard him say hes not afraid to call guys out when their not in the gym. He's is for sure a huge part of what the sens are but i dont think he should be the guy giving speeches before games or the guy you can count on to lead the way. He is definitely a important piece of the leadership core but he leads in a different way then a captain should. He's the perfect alternate imo as is phillips. I always pictured mike fisher as being a good captain after alfie retired.

Agreed. Chris Neil may be my favorite Senator ever (either hockey or political) but this team belongs to Spezza now. It's such a no brainer that I'm afraid they might screw this up. Let's hope Melnyk doesn't provide any input.

Spezza needs the 'C'. It's been his team since he came back from injury in 2010-11 and went into beast mode.

If he can stay healthy, I think a 'C' on his chest and motivation from the Olympic snub + Alfie saying Detroit is better...we could see a crazy Spezza. Especially if Bobby and himself click.

I don't think Eric Staal is particularly mature. He's about as streaky as they come for an elite player and it's not as if Carolina has blossomed under his leadership. It was Brind'Amour's team that won the Cup.

We all know Spezza has the talent and his two-way game has improved immeasurably.

Now it's really going to be about his health from here on out.

Niel has a lot of attributes you would associate with being a good captain. When you're the best player on a team everyone looks up to you in a leadership role. Spezza has probably been the best player throughout his time playing at different levels and has been captain.

What? That is dumb. Alfredsson has always leaned on guys like Neil, Phillips and Gonchar. There is no reason Spezza could not fit himself into that group. Alfredsson's strength as a leader was his effort on the ice. It's not like he was monopolizing dressing room talk-time or something.

Spezza has had the pressure on him for years now. His whole demeanor has changed, and can be witnessed in the way he handles the media. Nothing was stunted.

It's great timing for Spezza. He still has guys like Big Rig and Neil that will be vocal and lead by example, and a slew of younger guys who are now more than just spring chickens and have atleast a few years under their belt (Karlsson, Turris, Smith, Greening, Condra etc.).

I also think a guy like Methot is a great guy for the room and will/has emerged as a leader on this team.

Can't wait for the new era.

Wrong, this would not trump Luongo.

I love Neil and all but I don't think you want your captain to be a 13 minute a game type player. He's going to be a great alternate and he deserves that.
But Spezza deserves the C for sure.

Spezza will become the captain and Neil and Phillips will wera the A. Phillips will probably retire in three seasons(Ottawa giving him a 2 year extension), Neil will probably follow suit and after that Karlsson or Methot will be in line.

You could argue Spezza's been the leader of the team for the last 2-3 seasons.

I think he has been. Having him out of the lineup made our offense dry up. He was always a threat at least.

I think Spezza benefited from not having the pressure of carrying the team his first 5 years, now I know he deserves the captaincy but I think the pressure would have been negative for him in the 2005-2007 years where there were alot of questions about choking dogs etc etc.

Captiancy aside...

Spezza's chance to shine comes with Bobby Ryan on his wing and the best player in the game feeding him pucks.

Thank you Bryan Murray for Bobby Ryan.

The new Sens era starts now.

The part about Phillips 'not buckling' in the play-offs was ironic...

I guess the author missed our little trip to the Finals.
