Brendan Smith point potential

Hey everyone,

I've been a big fan of d-man Brendan Smith over the years, and I'm just wondering everyone's thoughts on his progression and whether Wings fans feel he is ready to break out this year?
I like how Mike Babcock has handled his devleopment.

Thoughts?

I believe Holland has said he expects Smith to get the green light to generate offense. If that's the case, and he sees respectable powerplay time, 30 points is a fair bet.

However that hinges upon him getting that ice time. If Kindl, Quincey, and DeKeyser get preference, 30 points would be an uphill battle.

Why on earth would Quincey ever get PP time? He's shown no offensive potential at all. Ugh. The thought makes me mentally vomit a little bit.

Because the reason he's made his money has been on the PP.

Quincey has scored 38 points before and scored at least 20 in every season that hasn't been cut short by lockout or injuries.

Yeah, I think 35 is a really good estimate. I actually think Smith could surprise and put up 40-45 points. It all depends on how much PP time he gets. Kronwall is a lock for the top unit but the rest of the offensive d-men are pretty unspectacular. Smith could wind up on that first PP unit and if he does the point potential obviously grows.

Also keep in mind Alfredsson has played the point on the powerplay and shoots right. Don't be surprised if he ends up on the top unit with Kronwall.

He also has a whopping 11 points in 90+ games as a wing(playoffs included), the guy only scored because he was given top pp mins on teams with no other choice. He doesn't have nearly the same offensive talent that Smith does.

For powerplay I hope and sort of think we see this

PP1
Abdelkader- Datsyuk- Zetterberg
Alfredsson- Kronwall

Franzen- Weiss- Nyquist
Smith- Kindl

I expect to see Tatar, Helm (if his old self), Andersson, and DeKeyser get some PP time as well.

This is true, the second pairing should be Smith and Kindl in that case, if Smith receives less pp time than Quincey again I will lose it.

Doubt Abdelkader will be used on the top pairing, maybe he will be used at a net front guy, if he isn't successful at that then he shouldn't get regular pp minutes, it should go to Tatar/Helm.

and would speak volumes for our lack of creativity. We've needed a right handed shot lower on the boards to open up the other half of the ice for our powerplay, and we have a guy who could be excellent at it. Alfredsson should be down low, looking for one timers from D or Z, or looking to set Z up on the other side.

Sammy gets a lot of flak, but I'd rather see him on the point if it means we get Alfredsson down low. Of course, I'd rather just see us put a lefty D on both sides and not worry about it so much.

For his peak? 40-45 points. He can be a dangerous offensive guy who cheats on his assignments.

For this coming season? 20-25 points.

If they're only going to use three defenders on the PP (which I think they'll do), I'd prefer them to be Kronwall, Kindl and Smith. I think Kronwall-Ericsson, Quincey-DeKeyser are solid PK pairings, and Kronwall and a forward, then Kindl-Smith would work out well as the PP pairings.

Dekeyser and Ericsson should stay away from the Power Play, IMO.
