2013 Islanders Prospect Poll #18

Prospect Criteria for the purposes of this poll mimics the ‘Hockey’s Future’ Prospect Criteria: If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.

My goal is to have these polls run for 48 hours each and to extend through the top 25 prospects as per hfboards.

Out of who's left, gotta go with Petrov. I still doubt he ever comes over, but he's got the talent to be way up this list.

Agreed.

Anyone know the latest on this from Point Blank June 16th?

According to the Russian sports outlet R-Sport, the Islanders have offered Petrov a guaranteed roster spot after his contract expires next summer in hopes of luring him to the States, and in time for him to be a part of the 2014-15 Islanders team. Here’s what his agent said to R-Sport:

“We are in close contact with them and they are expecting Petrov,” Tyzhnykh said of the Islanders. “And they are not just expecting him, but they are ready to guarantee him a place in the roster now.”

“His contract with Ak Bars is valid for one more year and he has to work it out,” said the agent. “We’ll see what will happen afterwards. Petrov is turning into a leader of the Kazan team, so let’s not jump too far ahead.”

Hypothetically, let's say that the above comes true...

Then, where does Petrov belong on the list?

5th maybe 6th imo.

I was gonna ask the same question. If Petrov were coming over for sure this year, where would he be? TBH I think he would give Strome a run for his money. Petrov has more size, just as much talent (he was slated to go top 5 I believe), plays in a better league and amongst men. Petrov for all intents and purposes, is our best prospect IF he was ready to play.

KK has the skills, but hasn't proven anything. the thing that puts Petrov over the top is his ability to step in the game right away due to his size, speed, skill and experience.

Who would hold more trade value, assuming Petrov and Strome were both available to play?

I am leaning Petrovs side on this one

I think that one year from now Petrov will be in top 10, possibly top 5 as some guys will probably be graduated. However I would not see him as a better prospect than Strome in terms of their skillsets. Just not sure how much offense is in him. Petrov is big, fast with a good shot, defensively responsible, I'm just not sure how much of offensive IQ, creativity and vision does he possess. If he signs, he is immediately a top 9 player IMO as he is/was also used in checking role in Ak Bars. He also likes to use his weight and could be quite aggressive. He plays a very NHL style game. That being said, I think Strome will have a much bigger offensive impact due to his IQ, if that makes any sense...

5th at the lowest in a battle with Brock Nelson. I have Strome as a cut above everyone else. The potential of Reinhardt and Pulock to possibly be 1st pairing defenseman in the molds of Alex Edler and Duncan Keith respectively, have them ahead of Nelson and Petrov slightly (Though I think its a four person group below Strome).

When it comes to comparing Petrov and Nelson you are beginning to split hairs. It becomes a matter of preference and how much projection you allow in your analysis. Flip a coin, but Nelsons flexibility to play any forward position gives him the slight edge in my book but if you put Petrov ahead of him, I couldn't argue it.

It was between Petrov and Persson. Went with Petrov simply for the upside.

If Petrov had come over, hes much higher on the list in theory...but why even vote for him at any point then? If its based on skill/potential then he should already be higher on the list...if its based on how much they will help the franchise, hes a nonfactor until he crosses the pond

We voted for Ullstrom and Hickey. Technically, Petrov is still a prospect until age 25/26 and at that time he becomes a free agent. Petrov will do what others have done and wait till he can get a one way and a short ELC or no ELC at all.

IF he (Petrov) was able to play this year...I'm sorry, but pound for pound right now, Petrov IS better than Strome. Strome is a great player, no doubt and may surpass Petrov at some point or never do it. Both players are amazing to say the least. Both have elite potential, but only one is "truly" ready to step in and be able to play with the best and worst of our guys. I do not see how you guys can't see that? I am not saying Strome is crap or that he won't amount to anything. What I am saying is that if you put Strome against Petrov...Petrov has him beat in just about every category and I would like to state that this is really only because of age and experience, instead of one being a lot better than the other. In saying that, Petrov should be our top prospect..or should have been (IF he was ready to play now). Don't just look at the points. Strome is like Lee in that his 2-way game is not so hot. Again, I am NOT saying these players are garbage. All I am saying is that they still have a few things to learn before having a full time gig.

Just my 2 cents.
