Who remembers Canes vs Devils 2009 series?

I hear people talk about great series all the time, but this one NEVER gets mentioned, and it's even a fairly recent one too...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm2OLboZkko

This series was MAGNIFICENT... two less-covered teams with not much reputation around the league but this was an EPIC series... Brodeur and Cam Ward had some amazing goalie duels along with clutch play and nothing but PURE HEART hockey played at its finest...

The Canes won the series in STUNNING fashion (similar to how my Leafs got stunned), they trailed 2-3 in the LAST 1:30 OF GAME 7 and scored two goals with an incredible Gleason play from his knees to stun the Devils..

I was not a big fan of either of these teams, but watching that series gave me huge chills... some of the best hockey I have ever seen...

Staal's goal came with just 32 seconds left in regulation - the latest third-period game-winning goal in a Game 7 in Stanley Cup Playoff history
- New Jersey became the first team in the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs to lose when leading after two periods (teams were 29-0 previously)
- Cam Ward became just the sixth goalie in NHL history to win his first three career playoff Game 7 starts
- Carolina won for the first time in a Game 7 -on the road- in its franchise history (including the Hartford Whalers)

The Leafs-Bruins series reminded me so much of this series...

How could I forget, what a way to end a hall of fame career for Shanahan, one of the all time great meltdowns by Brodeur, pretty much the day he was no longer an elite goalie

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Great series indeed.

Jussi Jokinen scored a couple of huge goals in that series.

Edit: jokinen and staal

Yes. In my opinion 2009 was the best playoff year post-lockout, and this series along with the Pit-Wsh and the Pit-Det were the best ones that year.

All I know is that Det-Pit series was one of the worst.

For all the hype that Pitt-Detroit and Pitt-Washington got, I still think this was the best series that playoff year, and by a fair margin at that.

actually the Ducks-Wings series has been better better I think, but there were a lot of great series, Pens-Caps/Wings, even the Canes-Bruins series.

That Staal goal in the last minute was unreal considering they just tied it not even a minute prior to that.

John Forslund's call to that goal was awesome too

That was a terrible series, at least by the standards of 7 gamers. Game 1 was a blowout, game 2 was a shutout by CAR, game 4 Carolina rout (4-1), game 5 Bruins rout, game 6 Bruins score early and hold on to win 4-2

And I don't think either of the OT games can be called classics.

Am I bitter? Um yeah, I am bitter considering that Carolina rolled over like dogs in the next round in probably the worst Round 3 performance by any team since the 04-05 lockout.

I don't think it helped that most of the games in this series (if not all) weren't nationally televised. Since 2002 the Hurricanes have really been a thorn in Brodeur's side.

Great series, it got overshadowed a lot because 2009 was a great playoff year (a lot like 2013) from an entertainment perspective and there were other great series. Plus, Carolina and New Jersey aren't exactly classic franchises. If this was a Bruins/Habs series we'd hear about it everyday, so I think that hurts this series.

But I remember seeing Game 7 at the end. Watching the tying goal and then when I saw Staal burst down the wing I tapped my wife and said "look out" as if I was anticipating a goal.

Hey, don't feel too bad Devils fans, the Bruins did similar things to us, and then some, in 2013.

- They ended their (Devils) run as Eastern Conference Champions in 2002

- The beating Brodeur received on his 34th birthday and Staal's late tying goal in Game 2 of the 2006 playoffs...after the Devils won 15 straight games (including 4 vs the Rangers in the first round)

- That series

It's funny how the Canes make the playoffs once every 3/4 years since 2002 but always ended the Devils seasons when they do.

On that topic, the Devils & Canes may have the most underrated rivalry in the league. For two teams not in the same division there's a lot of playoff history. The memory finish to the 2009 series and the Stevens/Francis hit being the most notable incidents. I wonder if the history will spark a consistent rivalry with the two teams being in the same division now, for the first time.

How do Devils & Canes feel about the other team?

apart from the despised traditional division rivals the canes rank up there as next in line of hatred. devils fans cant stand that team. having them in the division will only fuel that more.

From a Canes fans prospective, the Devils are pretty high up there on the list of hated teams. Stevens KOing half the team probably helped that along.
