The pick that will be debated for years apparently. Did outscore Andrew Shaw on a per game metric in his draft season the guy they keep comparing him to. Missed substantial time with a whiplash issue if you look at his numbers. Will be interesting to see if he breaks out, has grown 4 inches and 30 lbs, since he broke into the OHL, will probably continue to get bigger. Does need to not fight our own guys though.

Was going to stop at 25, went to 30 last year, but people were still participating at a pretty good rate. Kind of undecided as De Haas and Coreau are probably worth ranking. But for now I think we will end here, somebody else could also take over if they feel that strongly about getting to the same 30 number. Not quite as deep as last year with all the graduations.

de Haas. I think he could become that big, fast, athletic stay-at-home (third pairing) guy we've always coveted. Not sure on mean streak, though.

Went with Pope because I really like the coaching situation at UNO, but I can't fault people for liking De Haas. I am glad that we have a ton of time to develop these guys.

It'll be easier to compare when he starts playing college hockey. It's hard to say. He had decent enough numbers but I think it's his skill set that intrigues most around here. (Size + skating) I think he's a longer term project type still. Give him 3 seasons in college and he can be a rewarding prospect. Keep in mind we're on #25 for a reason though.

I don't know much about the BCHL, but it looks like he had an okay regular season, but a good playoff. He had 9 points in 15 games, which was second amongst all defensemen for the entire playoff. First had 10 points in 17 games.

But he's also a player where offensive stats alone won't give you the real picture, so it's still hard to tell. The league doesn't track +/- or any defensive stats whatsoever.

In terms of success, it looks like Penticton (de Haas's team) lost to Surrey in 6 games for the BCHL championship. de Haas only had 1 point in that series, so he was plainly tearing it up before then. 8 points in 9 games.

What happened to Aubry? He looked really promising if I'm not mistaken 2 years ago. Seemed to be a nice "project" type of guy with a big frame.

Just buried behind better guys that came up? Any chance for him to overcome his situation?

I don't know we will see, he had a very rough year last year. Although he seems to be more willing to fight all of a sudden as he has filled out his frame. I just don't think he is in the right organization, he has been passed by some guys and has his work cut out for him big time. He does have two years left before we have to qualify him though. Keep thinking that is a mistake whenever I see it on capgeek though, thought his deal expired after next year.

The BCHL is a very good league that sends a lot of kids to top NCAA teams. Most consider it the second best Tier 2 league out there behind the USHL. Dekeyser actually played there for a year.

I found this in an old Grant Sonier article about last year's World Junior A Challenge.

"D James de Haas, Canada West (Detroit Red Wings 6th, 2012)
At 6-4 with good mobility, that's all he needs to have a chance in the NHL. I liked how simple and sure his overall game was. He has grown two inches in the past year, so he will need time fill out and adjust to his size. He's also going the college route, so he will have plenty of time to develop -- and slow growth is never a problem in Detroit's deliberate pipeline."

Good point!

It looks like DeKeyser played there at the same age.

DeKeyser's stats were: 58 GP, 8+17=25.

de Haas's stats were: 53 GP, 5+18=23.

Obviously, those are pretty comparable, and both project as defensive left defensemen who can chip in a bit of offense. It'll be interesting to see how de Haas does, going forward. Obviously DeKeyser made a huge jump in the 3 years after the BCHL. I guess we'll have to keep an eye on de Haas and see what he can do.

Insane. He was drafted 6'2 and now he is 6'4...

Considering the poll didn't close until tomorrow and De Haas is now tied with Pope, I think starting #26 was premature.
