Shero getting laughably fleeced because he ridiculously overvalued Murray does not excuse Bergevin.
You (and quite a few others in here) make it sound like he signed a multi-year 6M AAV contract...
Personally, I think a trade is in the works, but even if it isn't, this is still a decent deal. It's short term and addresses a need that may be filled by one of our youngsters within a year, which is excellent.
Murray is a #5/#6 D on any team in this league. He can be #6 everywhere in this league. He's a step above guys like Drewiske, Bouillon, and on par with what Emelin can give to this team.
He's underrated around here. I see him as a good #5 for us.
Exactly... He is a bottom pairing d-man able to take 18 minutes a game and some s.h time. He will drop the gloves if needed and he will always clear the crease. Can't remember a defenseman doing that job for the habs since............................ a lot of time.
This guy is gonna help out on the pk a lot, we were horrible last year on the pk, couldn't move anyone from infront of the net. Murray played the most minutes on the Sharks pk per game las year, and they were ranked top 10 I believe.
The problem with the PK was therrien and his staff coming in and trying to fix what wasn't broken. Who was the big tough guy clearing the crease the year before when we dominated on the pk?
I think this is a very good mix of stay at home shot blockers/hitters and skilled puck movers.
Subban - Combination player who has skill and can hit
Gorges - Stay at home shot blocker, usually gets the puck out of the zone. Will be conservative so Subban can do what he does.
Markov - Although slower, he can still get it done and QB the PP. Still out most intelligent defenseman.
Emelin - One of the hardest hitting defensemen in the league, really like him. Tinordi/Bouillon likely fill in for him while injured.
Murray - Although slower than in the past, hits like a truck and blocks shots.
Diaz - Having this guy as our #5/6 puck moving defenseman is an extreme luxury.
Having one of Subban, Emelin or Murray always on the ice will definitely give forwards some apprehension when entering our zone. This is something that we haven't had in a long time. Our D will not be soft this season.
Love the signing...and If Murray is not good enough, we still have serviceable Bouillon, Drewiske or Tinordi/Beaulieu ready to step in.

You're over-analyzing a move that really doesn't need to be overly-analyzed
It's not going to wreck the team long-term, but those small bad moves are adding up. And while it's good that Bergevin is only messing up in the margins, it doesn't bode well for when he eventually needs to do something significant.
In his defense, the more significant moves he's made have been good (MaxPac extension, Ryder-Cole trade) or at least debatable (Subban bridge deal, Price contract).
I think this is just a case of us having some extra cap space and nowhere to really use it. The guy did just fetch two 2nds from one of the better GMs in the league so there are worse ways to spend 1.5M when the alternative is to just let the space sit there.
I don't think this move really means anything in terms of playing time or role shake-ups or anything like that.
It's part of the reason he is borderline feared. Lots of people can lay the body. Not too many out there make you fear that they'll rip the skin off your face afterwards too, for a mask. Lucic and Thornton won't come knocking quite so often next year, I bet.
This forum is hilarious, first Briere is finished and now Murray is too. It's like you just want to pity yourselves. Murray is not a depth move, he'll end up playing 18-20 minutes a game, and his time i bet won't go down much when Emelin gets back. He can't skate well, but he's a veteran enough to play positionally well, and he hits like a truck. Excellent signing.
Really can't wrap my head around anyone complaining here
It's a 1 year contract @ 1.5M. He's mean and nasty and can clear the crease. He's a bad skater and is slow. We have plenty of good skating Dmen who are fast, but couldn't clear my Grandmother out of the crease
Emelin is starting the year injured
And even with Emelin healthy, our 6th Dman is Bouillon/Drewiski
This gives us plenty of options as far as inuries go, as far as how people are playing go, as far as trades go, and as far as developing our prospects go (whether give them more time in Hamilton, or see if they are good enough to break the line-up as is)
I love this signing, late August, a little bottom pair depth that we needed, and exactly the style of low end player we need
It's already starting! Please do not encourage this.
Seriously, Murray is slower than a tortoise with a leg cramp. Whoever he plays with may find themselves having to defend by their lonesome whilst he catches up. If that player is Bouillon... well, like I said. Price is in for a rough night.
Alternative is moving Gorges to the right side and having:
Markov - Subban
Bouillon - Gorges
Murray - Diaz
Or we take it further and put Subban with Bouillon or Murray.
