Giroux for Subban (at the draft)

If the following occurs (which isn't that far fetched) could you see this happening at next year's draft:

- Philly misses the playoffs again and their d corps is brutal.
- Subban has another Norris type season
- Laughton, Schenn & Couturier show some real offensive potential
- MTL can't get Subban to sign long-term
- Tinordi & Beaulieu look ready to step in

I think Subban would sign long-term for similar money to Giroux's extension so it makes sense cap wise. I also believe that Subban will not sign long-term in Montreal (just a hunch - no reason behind it).

This should go over well between the two fanbases.

I say no, and I'd guess that most Habs fans would say the same.

Agreed. It's no slight against Giroux, but our D would be easily the worst in the league without Subban.

Two great players that are necessary to their team.

Right now the answer is no, but given the circumstances mentioned, would it be considered?

If Tinordi & Beaulieu are showing the capability of 20 mins a night by April, would that change your opinion?

Giroux has more value than Subban does at the moment imo, Giroux is on a great contract while Subban is going to break the bank with his next contract.

Although, I can understand why hab fans wouldn't like this trade being that their D core without Subban would probably be the worst in the league.

/ignore this, I guess I'm stuck in the past.

The trade is at the draft.....Giroux is making $8,275,000 starting next year.

Giroux is not on a great contract. When his extension kicks in his cap hit will be 8.25mil. Fair value, but not a great contract.

Wow... Totally forgot about Girouxs extension, and for some reason thought he was signed long term at his current cap hit.

Ignore my post

I would take it into consideration, however again our d-corps would still be incredibly weak without Subban, even if the two guys you mentioned happen to get called up from the AHL and perform admirably. Being a capable d-man is a far fetch from being one of the most dynamic d-men in the league. Subban drives our offense and is dominant on defense. Really tough to replace.

Of course, Giroux is an amazing player, but Montreal's weakness is defense, not offense.

I don't disagree, but if this "dynamic" player is unwilling to commit to you long term would you not want to get your hands on one of the most "dynamic" offensive players in the league who is also on a long-term contract?

Giroux (C) + Coburn (D)
----------------------------
Subban (D) + Plekanec (C)

(not sure capwise though)

I don't think the Flyers will miss the playoffs again. It seems silly to scrap Giroux just after signing him to such a big extension. I could see Philly offering a package around Jakub Voracek for Subban but nothing including Giroux makes a whole lot of sense to me.

If I HAD to trade Subban, I'd absolutely have to get a young d-man back in the trade. Someone that can eat up a lot of minutes.

I think Montreal would get good value on Subban by trading him for Giroux (even if the Flyers probably won't move him), but I'm not sure it makes the team better.

We'd need to bolster our defense.

No thanks. I'd rather have Giroux than Subban.

Fair enough. Can't say I disagree with your point of view.

If Subban has another season where he's a serious Norris contender, he will have around the same value as Giroux IMO.

If Subban is still in Norris talks next season, and Giroux isn't back to 90+ points, Subban will have more value...

I'd rather have Subban. By a decent margin, too.
