Johansson for your top-4 LD

If Grabovski signs with the Caps, they may look to move Johansson (RFA) for a top-4 defensive LD.

Send your offers. No 2014 UFAs please and no overpaid players unless you retain salary.

We can also add Jack Hillen or Tomas Kundratek, I think.

I just dont think it would be wise to deal another promising young forward for the Caps.. Johansson has something special, he's touching his potential. I could see him score 60 points this year..

It's not like we're trading him for nothing.

Aside from being Swedish, what do you think is so special about him?

He's fast and will probably score 60 points in a full season next to Ovechkin -which is what an over the hill Viktor Kozlov, an over the hill Mike Knuble, Chris Clark and Dainus Zubrus have done. I don't think that's all that special.

IF they sign Grabovski, which is the premise of the OP, it would seem sound to also get rid of either Laich or Johansson. There are probably no takers for the former.

First trading away Forsberg for an aging Erat, then waiting for Kuznetzov who never will show up.. Letting Semin walk and Tom Wilson isnt exactly going to be a scoring machine. Backstrom and Ovy wont be able to carry the burden.. GMGM hasnt exactly done anything right and this wouldnt really help his legacy either.

Him being swedish has nothing to do with but I can see you were trying to be funny or something. What is funny though is the fact that neither of the players you mentioned actually scored 60 points with Ovechkin

Neither has Johansson!

So aside from maybe one day being able to outscore Dainus Zubrus on a line with two superstars, what are the other things he does well that make him special?

Rumors around Grabovski are that it's a 1 year deal. I'd rather not continue doing this 2C song and dance every off-season. No point in trading Johansson right now, as he's still the best internal bet to be a 2C solution (even though I think he's a winger going forward).

Beyond that, there aren't many 2LD upgrades out there available for the ~$2M in cap space Washington will have if the $3M figure being floated for Grabovski is true. Even fewer are going to be available for Johansson.

I never said he did? I think he can do it and it seems quite likely considering he's only 22 and has improved offensively every single year. I dont think his ceiling is 60 points either. And while I really like and support the signing(?) of Grabovski I just dont think it's a smart move to sigh an UFA to let go an RFA with higher offensive upside.

Based on what? Del Zotto his rookie year was awful. Now Id say hes average on the defensive end with an above average offensive game.

John Michael Liles? Is he a LD? I'm not sure.

Toronto:
Liles with about 2 mill retained
Abbott

Washington:
Johansson (can he play wing?)

As is Carlson. In the NHL, two average defensive d-men won't cut it for the second-pairing

Change Abbott to a legit prospect and maybe. Yes, Johansson plays wing.

I had a feeling you were going to say that. Um what would you classify as a legit prospect? Holzer? Blacker? I think if we threw in one of those it would be pretty fair?

Yeah, its not like Carlson has been the shutdown pairing defenseman for 3 years in a row.

I'm glad someone finally spoke up about this. I was starting to think I was misremembering who Carlson was.

i'd offer gunner for johanssen + a second or something but we have nothing even close to a replacement for him. The best we could probably do is liles + but im sureother teams could offer better

Leafs are currently retaining salary on Scrivens and Frattin. I was under the impression you could only retain salary on two deals at any given time?

I thought that for the longest time, but then I looked up on capgeek.com and it said three players. I was so happy

Could something around Orpik for Johansson as a base work? Johansson on Crosby's line would be sweet to watch. I can understand why the caps would say no, Orpik is older and has an expiring contract. He also really isn't the stereotypical DFD that the caps are probably looking for
