Ten players not invited to Olympic camp who could make Team Canada

1. Brian Campbell
2. Cam Ward
3. Francois Beauchemin
4. Spezza
5. Iginla
6. Fleury
7. Dupuis
8. Schultz
9. Brassard
10. Paranteau

It's an article in globe and mail, on iPad so can't copy and paste the link.

Edit: Here's the link

Anyways, I think it's a pretty good add on list to the 47 invites. Can't really think of a glaring omission.

Thoughts?

Jason Garrison is #1 for me. Awesome player. Definitely should be there.

Maybe Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jason Spezza and Patrick Marleau, but I can't really think who to keep off in favour of them except maybe Jordan Staal.

Joffrey Lupul has been a better player when healthy than all of those players except for Jason Spezza. He also plays a position that is less ridiculously stacked than center and defense.

Uh, where's Jamie Benn on this list? Unless I'm missing something.

1. Brian Campbell - Always too defensively suspect. He skates well but so do a lot of better defenders.
2. Cam Ward - Has fallen down since winning the cup as an untested rookie. Not really a franchise goalie, it would seem.
3. Francois Beauchemin - Nice season, but not good enough or fast enough to go.
4. Spezza - Hey, he's a good playmaker, but he'd be so far down the chart of offensive candidates, why send him?
5. Iginla - Too old. Did you see him vs. Boston? Yuck.
6. Fleury - He was good in that year he won the cup, but has since looked average to sub-average.
7. Dupuis - Wouldn't even be in the playing field if not for Crosby.
8. Schultz - Hahaha. A rookie -17 1d d-man? No.
9. Brassard - NY's 3rd line center? No.
10. Paranteau - Just not good enough.

Let's be honest, they did a really good job at picking the players for this camp. Only one snub in my mind: Garrison. Benn and Seguin have the talent to play themselves onto the team but based on the season they had, they did not deserve to be at this camp.

I may be biased, but I would've preferred to see Burrows be selected over Marchand. Yzerman did say they were thinking about picking him for 2010.

None of those players are going to make it and neither are any of the other ones mentioned in this thread except maybe Lupul

Lupul and Spezza both deserved a camp invite at least.

Bergeron was the only player to make Team Canada last Olympics and not be invited to the camp that summer, so it would seem probable that none of them make it.

The article makes a case for Campbell saying there's too many RHD, and then says J. Schultz has a chance of making the team. Lunacy personified.

I still don't get how a guy as talented as Spezza is doesn't get an invite to camp.

I'd agree with this given that guys like Duchene and Couture are there.

Canada is absurdly stacked at center so I don't think Spezza would make it, but he should get an invite.

And as for Lupul, he's better than Kunitz so I don't see the logic of inviting Kunitz but not Lupul.

Because he isn't better offensively than Canada's elite offensive and he doesn't play physical enough or well enough defensively to be in the bottom six. He's like the Kyle Wellwood of team Canada.

Wasn't Spezza fairly average last year at the Spengler Cup. Same when he was with the Lakers in NLA

Even though he was facing inferior competition

In Spezza's last full season he was 4th in league scoring, 3rd among Canadians. He also had the third highest career P/G among all Canadians, behind Crosby and Stamkos. Whether people consider him "better offensively than Canada's elite" varies wildly from season to season, and part of the problem with Team Canada's selections is that they do not reflect this (and not just this time). If this camp were after the 2011-12 season than someone like Getzlaf might have a problem getting invited and people would be saying that he isn't good enough. There's no reason not to cover all your bases offensively, there's no downside and the worst thing that could happen with inviting Spezza is that he gets hurt or has a so-so season and doesn't make the team, but instead they've invited guys who shouldn't make the team in a million years in his stead.

Also, it's Team Canada, they don't need 2 checking lines, nor do they ever use 2 checking lines.

Jamie Benn, Evander Kane, Joffrey Lupul, Jason Spezza, Jason Garrison, Francois Beauchemin, Brent Burns and Cam Ward are the only guys I think have any sort of chance to make this team. Very slim chance though.

Serious lack of versatility, doesn't exactly play the way they want the team to play. Has never really played all that well for Canada.

Most guys on that team can play multiple roles and change roles during the tournament. Spezza doesn't have this ability, there's pretty much 2 forward spots on the team he can fill and there's no chance he's the ideal for either of those.

If he was 24 he'd probably be there, but instead they'll bring other younger players that could potentially challenge, or get a change to be acknowledged leading to more motivation and better potential to make the program later.

Except Crosby and Letang will do fine on international ice, unlike Iginla...

Never said that I think he will do well but using a 4 game sample to prove a player isn't good is a terrible argument as Letang looked like a Pee Wee hockey player and yet he is in consideration (Although I pray we don't take him).
