Does Protein Powder Expire?

Could be a hilariously stupid question but I just cleaned out my closet and I found 5lbs of unopened protein powder - "BioSteel Advanced Recovery Forumla" hell everything that was around it reeks of vanilla

Curious if it expires. I can't find an expiry date which makes me think it doesn't but I also don't want to try it and have it taste like sewage.

My buddy discovered the answer is "yes." If it's unopened it might be fine, but once opened it will not stay good for as long as if it were new. I believe expiration dates only specify how long the preservatives will do their job, not the date it's inedible...so while it might be OK now, it probably won't stay good.

My friend had some odd things growing in his powder. He used it anyways, and then had to spend a day doing unspeakable things to his toilet.

I had the same thing. My wife talked me into throwing it away, as, if there's mold or fungus growing on it, it'd be too small since the protein particles/"grains" are too small to see. Valid point, though it did still taste good on the one scoop I tried.

You'll be fine as long as it's not completely ancient

It's probably close to 4 years now. I'm undecided what to do with it, I feel like that guy on the news trying to decide whether or not he'll get a cronut burger

Yes it expires. Usually a year, year and a half they are good for depending on the brand.

Try storing your supplements in the refrigerator, helps to keep it from crystalizing.

Yes they expire. If its over 3 years old i would not take it. 3 years is pushing it also but it should still be ok up until then./

I'd say just toss it tbh.

Yes. Humidity from open atmosphere has an effect on all powdered foods/supplements. It *probably* could last a few years in the fridge.
