Calgary - Edmonton

Now I know a deal between the 2 teams is near impossible (although it has happened in the past)

Calgary gets:
Ales Hemskey 1 year 5M

Edmonton gets:
Matt Stajan 1 year 3.5M
rights to Akim Aliu

Calgary is pretty weak on the right hand side (hudler, Jones, steps) so getting glass house Hemskey will definately help fill out their RW situation plus he proved he is good for developing young kids and it would be fun to watch him play with the likes of baertschi. Hemskey is hands down the more talented player of the 2 but the fact that he hasnt played a full season since Hall and Nugent Hopkins were still wearing diapers and the fact that he is priced at 5M in a 60M cap world makes trading him pretty hard.

Edmonton gets another option at the C position and helps round out their bottom 6. seeing as their top 2 RW positions are pretty much nailed down (yaks and eberle) a couple years ago i would give Stajan away for free but the last 2 years Stajan has really stepped up and has been able to fill any slot from the 1st to the 4th line with a good attitude where he comes out and battles hard every night. He is a great defensive forward that would prove well with the offensive juggernaut that is Edmonton. Edmonton also get Akim Aliu's rights who wasnt really given a fair enough shake in Calgary but can play a big body game give the opportunity and could provide some "protection" for Edmontons young guns. Edmonton also saves 1.5M giving them a bit more breath with around 3M.

Pass. If we're moving Hemsky, it's to someone we don't play all the time, and especially not a rival

No thanks I can't image that a team with center depth of Backlund,Monahan,Knight,Reinhart could possibly be competitive with even the worst teams in the league.

Do not want Hemsky unless you are giving him away.

Gets us a 3-4th line center. But I have a bad feeling hemmer would come back to bite us in the ass 5 times a season. Still a top 6 guy but risk with health.

No interest in aliu, don't want a face puncher who can't play. Brown fills that spot

Pass. With Stajan, we know we've got a guy who can stay healthy and play a solid two way game.

How does this move help the Flames? We have an abundance of wingers and a shortage of good centers. Hemsky wouldn't return here so why do we make this move?

Only would do this from a Flames side if Monahan plays good/great in a 9 game tryout and Knight looks good as well.

Still doesn't solve the problem that we have to many wingers already where would Hemsky fit?

Why would Edmonton want Matt Stajan? Hemsky can be easily had, but we're not going to saddle ourselves with Stajan.

Stajan was the Flames best player last year.

Given 0 chances in an offensive role, getting no powerplay time and still put up decent numbers for a two-way center being tasked with shutting down the oppositions best lines regularly. The 2013 Stajan is the exact type of player you would want young players and especially Monahan to learn from entering the league, (or at least a much better than anyone else the Flames have in the system) doing the little things right making him defensively responsible is what Monahan will need to be able to do to have true success as a top line center should he achieve it.

The Flames also need a center much more than they need wingers and while they have talked about using their cap space to their advantage they have also shown that they want to be frugal and paying a 30 year old soon to be UFA offensive winger who put up ~20 points last season 3M more than a 29 year old soon to be UFA two-way center who put up ~20 points last year only makes sense if they think they can get significantly more at the deadline for Hemsky than Stajan. That's going to depend on if 2011 Stajan or 2013 Stajan shows up or if Hemsky can stay healthy and bounce back. Pretty big risk to throw away 3M for.

It's one of those trades that doesn't make much sense from either team, especially when you factor in they are rivals.

Do not want Hemsky.

Too often injured and way too inconsistent.

Edmonton can do better than this when dealing Hemsky. Not what the fan-base has been asking for the last couple years mind you, but better than this deal.

2 things.

This is bad for the Oilers because Aliu is a UFA and Hemsky >> Stajan (and hell I like Stajan) so they could get better value elsewhere.

This is bad for the Flames because it removes their only natural centerman that has surpassed 25 points in a season.

Probably not, if he had that value he would have been moved by now. He's going to have to have a strong injury free bounce back year, if he does the Oilers can move him at the deadline for pieces. But right now there are too many questions around the guy to risk paying much for him.

Hemsky is quite consistent. Career .74 PPG. He's just also consistently injured.
