Habs' UFA D-men -- A Time Bomb!

I don't remember much discussion about this but at the end of the upcoming season, 5 of our current roster defensemen will be UFAs. They are:

Markov
Emelin
Murray
Diaz
Bouillon

Added to this list is PK Subban who will be a RFA and in line for a huge raise. Assuming that Frankie B retires at the end of the season, that still leaves 5 of our top 7 top dmen looking for new, and in many cases, larger contracts. Amongst significant defensemen only Gorges is locked in for the long term.

Obviously, PK's deal is the top priority. But Emelin's is also very critical. We really cannot afford to allow him to walk. Markov will be retained if it can be done at a reasonable salary. But if he goes the UFA route--or is part of a deadline deal--signing Diaz becomes a priority, presuming his play this season justifies the investment.

Sure we got defencemen on the farm. Tinordi is knocking at the door. Beaulieu is offensively gifted but a real adventure in his own zone. Nygren, Dietz, Thrower, Ellis, Bennett--who really knows?

Without PK, Emelin and a couple of other NHL-tested blue-liners secured with new deals, the Habs are going to be in for a very rude awakening come next season.

Greater revenue, Gionta replaced by Christian Thomas, Bouillon gone.
Option to replace Diaz and Murray with rookies.

Subban, Markov, Emelin will be signed to market value deals.

No Problems.

Yeah, it's been brought up a little bit. I doubt it goes on for too long as some negotiations will surely be done during the season. I’m hoping once Emelin comes back and is hopefully healthy and normal he can be signed to a cap hit similar to Gorges, could be naive on that one though. I think Markov should be extended too. These things get done and work themselves out, some decisions aren’t always popular or even right in hindsight, but that’s way the management team makes the big bucks. The D will be pretty interesting next year for sure. Too early to tell how as some young guys might blossom nicely. We’ll just have to wait and see, which is a virtue shared by all Habs fans.

Time bomb? Meh, not really. Watch this.

Markov --> Release. Worth too much, best years past, injury prone.
Emelin --> Re-sign, mid-term, 3-4 years
Murray --> Release.
Diaz --> Re-sign maybe 2 years, no more. Soft but serviceable.
Bouillon --> Release.

Subban --> $7-8M for 7-8 years.

See, no crisis. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. I could totally be GM.

I actually agree with this. You definitely release Bouillon. And probably Murray unless he turns in a great year and will re-sign for Bouillon money. Markov is the interesting one. You really need to re-evaluate late in the year and see how much he has in the tank and where Beaulieu is at. (Not to mention his asking price).

But if a gun were to my head today, and assuming he'd want north of $5 mil, I'd let him walk.

Tinordi, Beaulieu will both be ready

Even if we lose 3 of them (Bouillon, Diaz, Murray) we could have this lineup

Subban - Tinordi
Emelin - Markov
Gorges - Beaulieu
Pateryn

Dietz, Nygren and Ellis will also all have gained significant AHL experience at this point

I'd sign Diaz or Markov depending on what Markov ask for in terms and salary

Lots of young d-men on the way, but it would be a big mistake to bring on too many at once. The only one arguably ready is Tinordi, but he may start AHL with the Murray signing. Beaulieu Nygren Dietz Ellis Bennett are all at least 1 year away.

Ideally you keep Markov at a lower rate, resign Emelin and Subban.

Hopefully pick up another top 2 via trade/free agency.

Subban - X
Emelin - X
Gorges - Markov

Fill the Emelin pairing with a rookie or Diaz if he returns to the form he showed early last season.

Orpik would be a great pick up Could be perfect for Subban.

Markov < Sign only to a short term decreased salary, reduced minutes>
Emelin <Re-sign>
Murray <Release>
Diaz <Trade at deadline/Throughout season>
Bouillon <Release>

Sign Subban to fair contract.

(Baring no trades/signings to bring in any new defensemen)

Subban Tinordi
Gorges Emelin
Markov Beaulieu
Pateryn

After this season I am afraid that Markov will have slowed down tremendously, and might only be able to handle 5-6 duties. However, if he can handle 3-4 pairing minutes, I would think about swapping him with Gorges.

I don't see that as a big deal at all. For one thing, look at the list of UFA defenseman that summer on Capgeek. It promises to be fairly rich. Also, the Canadiens have a few top notch prospects at that position who will be ready to take on a bigger role, most notably Beaulieu and Tinordi, and possibly Pateryn.

I'm not concerned one bit.

I know he's not a D but doesn't Eller need re-signing to?

I would be surprised if MB doesn't go hard after one of those UFA Ds like Girardi or Hjalmarsson. I like the idea of having the young guys come up, but who knows.

Yes he does.

Our priorities:

Subban ($8.5M)
Eller (approx $4M)
Emelin (approx $3M)
Diaz (approx $3M)
Markov (reduced salary)

We'll have room.

Markov will be extended for much less than what he'll get this season. $4-$4.5

Bouillon won't be re-signed.

Emelin will get extended. $2.5-$3

PK will be re-signed mid year, or will be dealt. $7.5-$8

Tinordi and Beaulieu will be on the full-time roster.

Subban/Markov
Gorges/Tinordi
Beaulieu/ ?

Subs: Drewiskie, Pateryn

I can only see one empty spot left.

I very highly doubt PK will be dealt. Why would you even think that?

No sh$t. And I don't think that that will happen.

I wasn't speaking an ultimatum. Or predicting the outcome.

But if for whatever reason PK doesn't want to play in Montreal, ie he doesn't re-sign, he'll be dealt. That's pretty obvious is it not?!?!

I'd bet my house he'll re-sign, but stranger things have happened.

I think we're either keeping one of Diaz or Markov. Not both. I could see Beaulieu making the team full time in 14-15 so I can't see keeping both of them.

If Diaz can build on his play at the beginning of last season than I think maybe he should stay. Don't really like the idea of giving up on the General though.

If Markov was willing to take a pretty signinficant pay cut (definitely less than 4 per) then that might complicate things.

I can't help but day dream that Murray can be really effective and we can keep him on our bottom pairing. Probably won't happen though.

Definitely have a lot of options though which is always good.

Your letting Markov go for nothing? Why not trade him at the deadline and fetch a high draft pick? A team like Detroit would give a 1st rounder + for him. Bad GM! Bad, bad GM!

I posted in another thread that there are many good ds coming up on UFA as well.

Gorges is signed through. Subban should be extended. I imagine Emelin is as well, along with Markov at a reduced salary. Tinordi/Beaulieu on the team and one of the better UFAs. Looks good to me.

44DD is still there as a 7th d. Beaulieu/Tinordi as the 8th d.
