I mostly remember him for being a promising young rookie for the Flames.

He's 31 now, damn it makes me feel old.

I really thought that Lombo would get a tryout somewhere, or maybe take an AHL contract to try and fix his game. But it looks like his career really is pretty much over.

It's sad. I really liked him with Calgary and Phoenix.

Damn. I wanted to sign him in NHL 14. He is crazy fast.

Disappointing to hear. Lombardi did a solid job as a #2 center in Phoenix his first go-around.

its a young mans game now, sooooo many players need to take their talents overseas or well retire.

Concussions... Concussions.

He still has good speed but his skill level has diminished so much that he's barely a useful player to have on the ice.

Perhaps a fresh start away from the big leagues will do him some good.

Drafted by Edmonton and Calgary, so strange.

What makes it even more strange...

Matthew Lombardi: drafted in 2000 by Edmonton, re-drafted by Calgary in 2002.
Jarret Stoll: drafted in 2000 by Calgary, re-drafted by Edmonton in 2002.

On that note, Jarome Iginla and Dion Phaneuf are from Edmonton and Ryan Smyth and Taylor Hall are from Calgary (Smyth is from Banff -- 1.5 hours from Calgary). I believe there's more examples of this but can't remember right now.

He was so terrible with the Ducks. I'm just glad we only gave up McMillan for him. I remember when Getzlaf was out for a few games and Lombardi took his place as 1C. What a nightmare that was.

I'm just imagining Lombardi as a 1C, and it's making me cringe

Former Oilers captain Jason Smith was from Calgary. And the Flames had a bunch of Edmonton born players under Sutter...Langkow, Bouwmeester, more that I'm forgetting

Hall is just payback for Iginla

He was very good in Phoenix the first go around.

He ten left us and signed with Nashville, only to get a concussion at the start of the season. Then it was RIP Lombardi. Such a shame.

He was my favorite player while he was in Phoenix.

Wishing he would have bounced back with a team, hopefully he does well in Europe.

wishing him the best. was excited to see him play again in Phoenix last year but he just couldn't hang with the NHL level after his concussion.

Yeah because the Oilers wouldn't have taken him first overall if Hall was from Winnipeg or something, they only did it because they wanted payback for Iginla, not because he was the undeniable first overall! Congratulations on figuring out the ploy!
