It's meh. I enjoyed it at the beginning, but then it just gets way over the top once the "real story" kicks in and I just lost interest at that point.

Worth a watch though.

Nothing better than great writing. I watched Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (again) last night. The writing is so fresh.

Really? The over-the-topness is what makes this movie worth watching. I thought it was pretty funny.

If you like good writing I'd highly recommend a rewatch of True Romance, The Insider and especially The Departed. My favourite movie, Dazed and Confused has my favourite writing ever however.

I loved that "Sinkhole de mayo" line from the trailer. Hopefully it'll be available on HBO soon.

That scene between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken is pure subtext, and it's amazing. Really, really good movie - glad you enjoyed it.

Daycare center? I'm not ready for that kind of responsibility, man.

Also watched 2Guns. Great action flick as far as I'm concerned. Can't go wrong with a Mark Wahlberg/Denzel Washington duo in that type of movies.
In Bruges is great. Brendan Gleeson is terrific in it.

DRAIIIIIIINAGE

Loved DDL in this movie so much I watched gangs of new york right after

Maybe a bit of a weird takeaway from There will be blood was how good the music fit the scenes. Just excellent.
Not weird at all. The dude from Radiohead did a bang up job on the soundtrack.

I just don't like it when endings are not told but up to the interpretation of the viewer. I can understand why the movie ended at that moment though. It was already 2 and a half hours long. Great movie though. Respect to Denis Villeneuve. He directed Incendies too. I might watch Polytechnique next.

Yep that's what I think happens too but I just would have liked to be 100% sure.

The Departed is based on a Hong-Kong film called Infernal Affairs. It's actually far superior and its party of a trilogy.

True Romance is pretty ******. And Dazed and Confused is my favorite film as well, but it was largely improvised. So writing didn't have too much to do with it. Dazed's charm comes from his sprawling atmosphere. The nothingness surrounding the conversations. But writing didn't have too much to do with it. It's a tone based film.

You won't get a Pacific Rim recommendation here. Visually cool, but it had a bad script and bad acting. Rinko Kikuchi keeps her clothes on.

Mitch, it's all a matter of taste of course but I'm (quite literally) studying films for my life right now.

There is no way that anyone can say that True Romance is bad (if that's what you're saying) and while I agree with you that the tone of Dazed and Confused is great, most of the dialogue was NOT improvised (some of Parker Posey's was) and have very regular Richard Linklater tropes in pacing, style and topics.

As for the Departed, you can disagree which film is better (in terms of production, style, tone, panache, atmosphere and performance it goes to the Departed IMO) but I think that the movie Scorsese put out was flawless despite being a sort of remake. The spirit, the flavour of the movies are different enough that I can judge them on their own merits.

Another good movie is La Haine (1995) if anyone ever feels like watching a French movie.

My new favorite show is Hello Ladies starring Gervais' best friend Stephen Merchand. It's about an englishman bachelor who keeps trying to pick up gals in LA but fails. I find it's hilarious, full of awkward moments.

I'll definitely put it on my list, thanks for the suggestion.
