i wonder if the lack of goalies in the market helped this one along.

I just dont know if crawford can live up to that, my bold factless prediction is that he becomes untradeable in a couple of years.

I don't know. He's been good, but there's something about his game that doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in long-term success. Plus, these Hawks have made every goaltender look good in the last 5 seasons or so.

Overpaid by about a million.

Would much rather have seen a 5 year contract at 5 million, but I guess this is the downside to winning a Cup. He's comparable to Price, Howard and Hiller but he has a Cup and those others don't.

Agents know just as well as GMs know that the cap will be increasing quite a bit in the following years and are not giving discounts for FAs whose contracts kick in for the 2014-15 season.

I thought the whole point of the Hawks having Crawford was because they couldn't afford a better goalie under the cap?

When do Kane and Toews need new deals?

Cristobal Huet is still Cristobal Huet no matter what defense is in front of him, but I understand your point.

I hope they can extend Hjalmarsson too because the best thing about Crawford is the defense played in front of him. Not an insult on Crow because he's a decent goalie, but he won't be near as decent if the d-corps degrades.
This contract was supposedly worked out in June month 6/6yrs/6mil see a trend here

$1M per year too much, 1 contract year too much. But once you win a cup for your franchise, they are willing to overpay for you.

Don't forget Ray freaking Emery went 17-1 on that team. Horrible contract. Just horrible.

Waaaay too much for a guy who has all of one good season under his belt, and that one a half season with the most dominant team in the league.

At least when Howard got his big contract, he had three excellent seasons in the bag already.

At end of day the Hawks needed stability at position and they are pretty confident that Crawford brings that
Basically my thoughts.

As someone who has nowhere near the understanding of the cap and knowledge of league financials as Bowman, I think this contract is just awful. But, I have to trust the guy who was able to pull us out of cap hell and ice a Cup winning team again a couple years later.

I'm not going criticize the Hawks. They've won 2 cups in the last 4 years, so if they feel comfortable giving Crawford that kind of money then that's fine. They know more then I do. I still think it's a lot though. My guess is they are working on Toews and Kane's extensions now. They are both gonna get identical contracts and it's gonna be below market value. HF will cry.

Bowman did jack !@#$ to bring on that Cup in 2010. That was all Dale Tallon.

The first of Howard's good seasons was his rookie year, in which he carried an injury-riddled team to the playoffs; the second was 2011-2012, when for the first half of the season he likewise carried a team that had no business winning many games; and the third was last season, when once again he was the team's MVP. Ironically, his single mediocre campaign was his only one in which the Wings were good enough to regularly win games anyway.

Crawford's one good season was a half-normal length affair played with the best team in the league, and as one half of a 50/50 tandem.
