Yakimov looks very good so far. Big, can skate, great forechecker and can pass as well. I'd say Anisimov is a well done projection.

What I like most about Yakimov is how he can make extremely difficult passes after holding the puck for a long time. It seems to be impossible to take the puck away from him.

Slepyshev has been pretty invisible so far but man he can shoot the puck.

Yakimov 0+1, Slepyshev 1+0 after two periods.

Slepyshev finished with 2 goals and +3. Yakimov finished with an assist, +2, and 50% in the dot in the 11-0 game against Norway. Domination by Russia today.

Yakimov was better than his statistics and Slepyshev worse.

Anywhere to find a replay, or get decent highlights?

We already have one of those Russians on our team.

Slepyshev has an assist so far against the Swiss and Yakimov has a power play goal. 3-1 Russia in the second period

Ex Oilers prospect Cody Wild plays for the Orlando Solar Bears (who are on local TV) in the ECHL. This is the first time I've seen him play. I can see why the Oilers picked him - size, mobile, offensive instincts. Very noticeable. IMO Oilers pick players with tools/flash.

I know its only the ECHL but Brossoit got his 4th shutout in 6 starts tonight. Sitting at 0.82 GAA and a .963SV%. Hopefully his consistency is better on his next recall to OKC.

So what's the scope on our russian players or more specifically Slepyshev and Zharkov (why didn't he make the russian team?)

Do you guys think it was justified to pick Slepyshev and Yakimov where we did instead of players like Bjorkstrand, Jimmy Lodge, Andrighetto, Cehlarik, J.C. Lipon and Juuse Saros?

What was the thought behind those picks? Getting some much needed size?

For me, absolutely. I loved the strategy MacT did at the draft with our picks. He traded down and grabbed additional picks in some later rounds, and then got good value picks at those positions.

Starting from the late 2nd round to the later 5th and 6th rounds, the draft becomes essientially a game of luck (good scouting gives you better odds). And by adding more picks we increased our odds of finding good players. Our scouting staff hasn't done to well with our second rounders in the past and have either gotten burnt, or found slightly above average picks. So we needed to switch it up

Slepyshev, according to Corey Pronman, was ranked 17th in 2012 (was passed over) and around 56th in 2013. Getting him at 88 is a great value pick. Yakimov was also ranked a lot higher but fell due to the Russian factor. There is always the chance neither comes over, but it is more likely the typical 3rd round pick doesn't work out

We are leveraged our Russian presence due to having Yakupov. Those two Russian are more likely to come over with someone like that on the team. Likewise, if Yakupov splits or gets traded I doubt the Russians come over, and we wasted 2/3 picks. But they are still valuable trade commodities if they turn out.

We were also able to pick more long term projects by adding numerous picks, something we wouldn't have been able to do if we had the typical 5- 6 picks.

Greg Chase in the 7th round also appears to look very promising in Junior. So if the Russians don't come over our loss is mitigated.

I feel Yakimov is more likely to come over in the next 2-3 years, and Slepyshev will most likely stay in Russia for the foreseeable future. I could see him coming over as an added bonus for a playoff run in 5 years, should we ever happen to escape the basement of the NHL.

Russia lost 4-1 today to the Finns, but Shlep finished +1 and Yakimov won best player for Russia.

I remember there was an article that in which Yakimov said himself that he would come to NA and play in the AHL if he has to for the 2015 season. I will try to find the article in which he said he would. With Slepyshev I am not sure when he would. Does anyone know when Slepyshev's contract expires?

EDIT: I found the article here.

Look at the forwards section 4th paragraph and it has a mini tidbit on Yakimov.

Caught the last 2 periods of the Russia game.

I can really see what people are talking about with Yakimov. He is so dominant in the offensive zone the way he uses his size and reach. He actually has much better speed than I was expecting. Don't think he had any points today, but he created an amazing chance from the circle in the 3rd with his size to set up another Russian in front (didn't score, but he really should of off that feed). Created a dangerous chance of 2 from that same spot just overpowering Swedish defenders and looked very strong on the forecheck.

Slepyshev looked alright. He had a nice sauce feed from the point to the low circle on the 2nd Russia goal (secondary assist). Unfortunately they couldn't seem to get him the puck on the left point of the PP for that big 1 timer, but he showed some great hands in tight along the boards cycling with Grigorenko. Also showed some explosive speed. Overall didn't see enough from him to form a good opinion on him though.

Still really disappointed at Nurse not being here for Canada. After watching all the RR games so far for Canada, I definitely feel like he would have been a major upgrade on several defence man who have been extremely underwhelming. Dumba aside from a few nice rushes has looked terrible. In fact the only Dmen who have performed well imo are Ekblad, Morrissey, and Pouliot and even these players have made some dumb plays/ taken dumb penalties (isn't that why they kept Nurse off because he might take bad penalties or try to do too much?)

Anyways even with being bitter about Nurse, I'm still 100% behind Canada. Hoping for a big game vs the US in about an hour.

I watched Nurse play against Sudbury in the OHL a few days ago. In one shift, killing a 5 on 3, he blocked a shot with his leg and could hardly put any weight on it. He couldn't get off the ice though. He proceeded to block 2 more shots with his body over the next 30 seconds and then finally had the chance to limp off the ice. The guy is a warrior.

And this is in junior, not getting paid millions in the NHL. Man that is EXACTLY what we need! Gordon, Ewanyk, Nurse, you need heart and soul type of guys to win in this league.

Nurse will be great for us. I'm really excited to see how him, Moroz, Brossoit and the Russian duo work out
