Clarkson and it isn't that close. That contract is so blatantly bad, I've never seen a contract so difficult to justify as that one. I mean, sure, there are bad contracts, but at least there is justification. Crawford won the cup with the Hawks and Smith took the Yotes' pretty far, they're both at least valuable members of the team. Clarkson is a 3m player at best for the next 3 years and will be probably worth less at this point, but he's getting over 5m for the next 7 years. Probably the first contract I've ever seen that's a guaranteed buy out.
I mean really, I was a huge Clowe fan but the guy skates in the mud and it's really showed as he's declining sharply over the past two seasons. So give the guy a juicy 5 year deal. I mean give him 4.85m if that's what you have to, to get him. But 5 years, really? The guy is lucky to have a good one year of that deal.
Clarkson is a boom bust for me. That contract could be alright but it could turn out to be a nightmare contract.
Its the circumstances around the contract though, because I feel like they could have re-signed Clarke MacArthur and the Clarkson contract put them in a CAP situation with Kadri. I think the leafs should have prioritized Kadri.
Filppula could hopscotch past Clarkson depending on their season I don't see the 70-80 point player in him that NHL GM's seem to keep seeing.
I agree it has to be Clarkson or Clowe, of which I choose Clowe. As a fellow Newfie I root for him, but jeebus he was atrocious on the Rangers last year. The only hope for NJD fans is that Clowe was a sleeper agent planted by Lou to foil the Rangers' Cup chances and he's really not that bad.
The strangest thing to me about the Clarkson/Clowe thing is that the former made Lou look smart, and the latter refuted that notion.
Honorable shout-out to the goalies though, Crawford and Smith!
1). It was an extension that doesnt kick in until next year
2) it doesnt screw his own team out of one or potentially two great players like the clarkson contract does
Clarkson doesn't do that, we have the money for Dion and Phil next year. Not saying he isn't over paid, he is . I think Crawford is over paid too but these things are relative and it depends what the player brings to the table. Crawford gives you peace of mind knowing goal is not an issue, Clarkson brings us a much needed physical element.
The rumour is the Oilers offered him a mil more but less term. Don't love the price but I do like the player. If the cap is back near 70 Mil next year it won't matter much until he is older and the buyout vultures start circling.
