Rusty Klesla

He's thirty one years old. He can play either Left or Right D with equal effectiveness. He's a stalwart defensive D who can play physical and never makes any mistakes. He can handle big minutes when needed and can help out the PK. He's also injury prone and a virtual lock to miss some time each season. He's been an effective D for Phoenix and all Coyotes fans like him quite a bit. That said, he's a pending UFA and he's owed 2.975m (both cap and salary) this season. Given that we've got NINE defensemen on one-way contacts for this season, we've got to move one.

What I'd like in return is a forward prospect who's going to be playing in the AHL this season. One who's got decent upside (at least some top six potential) and won't take too long to be ready for at least some limited NHL minutes. Basically, a guy we can call up if we are in a pinch.

If you haven't got one of those, I might be willing to settle for a 2nd round pick. But that wouldn't make for a very fun thread, would it?

So, which teams out there could use this player?

Oh, and I'm not really looking for a roster player in return. Prospects are preferable, picks could work too.

9 one ways is nothing to worry about. Theres going to be a ton of one ways buried in the minors this year. That being said id love to have him on the jets. Don't have much to offer for prospects, maybe cormier or telegin? Our ahl roster is mostly filled with ahl vets or guys we can't afford to part with.

I could offer klingberg, but you'd be doing us a favor.

Michael Sgarbossa sounds like he'd fit your request and I'd move him for Klesla as long as he sounded like his extension was reasonable.

I'd consider giving someone like Ivan Telegin (great prospect, but has concussion troubles) for him if Grant Clitsome doesn't work out on the second pairing for the Jets.

It always feels good when a fellow fan agrees with you.

Really don't see that happening in Phoenix.

Would Phoenix be willing to retain some salary?

As a budget team, can't really afford to.

You have to realize without retaining salary and without taking a roster player you're seriously limiting the teams that could take him. Right off the bat there's only 11 teams with the cap space that can take him without other moves, and some of those teams are set defensively or have full rosters.

That being said Winnipeg could still take him by sending down Thorburn, which is inevitable anyways. We could really use a guy exactly like him, our D-core would look like this:

Enstrom - Buff
Klesla - Bogosian
Clitsome - Trouba

Stuart - Postma
Pardy - Redmond

We could always off load Stuart for a song anyways, even if it is salary retained.

So essentially a late draft pick? Surely Phoenix can get more than that.

No. a 1st round pick + a late round pick. Phoenix takes it and runs.

What first round pick? Unless you're seriously referring to Kyle Beach as that first round pick.

Wouldn't you want a first round pick for a defenseman you're trying to dump? I sure would....

Kyle Beach's value in no shape or form is close to a 1st round pick.

Didn't really answer me. Are you referring to Beach as that first round 'pick'?

Winnipeg does have a lot of very intriguing forwards.

Lowry, Sutter, Petan, Lipon, Kosmachuk, etc.

I like Kabanov quite a bit. Don Maloney is surprisingly publicly blunt about not being interested in Russian players. He took Tikhonov in the first round in 2008 and I don't believe he's drafted or traded for a single Russian since. He did claim Bryzgalov off of waivers once. That relationship need poorly. Even Tikhonov has been iced out and that kid had spent the majority of his years in the states. Not even a hint of an accent.

Love your reasoning. So how about Viktor Tikhonov or Daultan Leveille and a late pick for a roster defenseman? Hey both were first round picks in 2008 right.

Pretty solid. I also like Vincour. Geertsen, too, even though he doesn't fit the criteria in the OP.
