Just beautiful.
Hopefully we can Pietrangelo locked up before training camp. I'm not worried about him not signing, but the sooner we can get our defensive pairing figured out, the better.
I wouldn't mind having
J-Bo - Pietrangelo
Shattenkirk-Polak
Leopold-Jackman

(Forgive me if i've mixed up anyone's playing side)
I feel like those lines give us a nice mix of puck movement, and then physicality.
Leopold could offset Jackman's slower feet, and not as good puck-moving, while Jackman locks up the presence in front of the net to get pucks out.
Same scenario for Polak and Shattenkirk.

Switch Polak and Jackman. That's when Shattenkirk and Jackman played their best hockey of the season. But of course won't so that because he's got a love affair with Leopoldo-Shattenkirk as a pairing.

No NHL team should have interest in adding Ryan Whitney to their blueline. The worst defensive player on the Oilers the past 2 seasons.

when news came out that the blues were looking at giving a UFA a tryout, i was really hoping it would be Ron Hainsey

Now confirmed by the Blues

Quote:
The Blues have invited defenseman Ryan Whitney to training camp as a professional tryout.

Whitney is a free agent and most recently played for the Edmonton Oilers. Last season, he played in 34 games with Edmonton, tallying four goals and nine assists (13 points). He had a minus-7 rating.

For his career, Whitney has played in 474 NHL games, registering 50 goals and 209 assists (259 points).

Whitney's addition gives the Blues 51 players to start Training Camp.

I've seen this reference to a $1M difference multiple times in this thread as if $1M isn't much of a gap. $1M x 8 years = $8M. So they're really $8M apart. That ain't chump change.

I think a deal gets done somewhat soon but I don't think they're as close as some others seem to think.

Whitney would be the 7th/8th with Cole. He won't get a starting spot over Leopold.

Its not completely impossible for Whitney to get a spot over Leopold.

Would improve the PP IMO

Did you forget about Leopold? Whitney is not making this team. He's just here as a filler. As far as I'm concerned, Ian Cole is a better option than Whitney. I don't get even bringing Whitney in. Should have just given that time to Cole.

And he'd kill us in every other facet. I'm not a Leopoldo fan at all, but he's a much better option than Whitney at this point.

I think the Whitney bashing is a little overdone.

I watched them play quite a few times last year. He's by no means a first or second pairing guy, but he wouldn't hurt a 3rd pairing.

He can't skate anymore. And Leopoldo is a much more reliable player on the defensive side.

People seem to forget that it says he may get a training camp invite. Not even a contract an invite to training camp. It's very doubtful he'd be signed.

He hurt the Oilers 3rd pairing.

It is chump change when you're talking about a FRANCHISE defensemen about to enter his prime. $8 mil spread out over 8 seasons is not significant when discussing a player of Pietrangelo's caliber. Just look at the league wide buyouts to see what kind of money teams REALLY have.

I don't get this thread. Armstrong says he'll bring in a veteran to ensure there are enough defensemen to do their full practice schedule if Pietro holds out. Whitney fits the bill, as he's an experienced guy who is borderline for the NHL this year. But you have to think Whitney would be at another camp if he got invited, since the Blues' defense is going to be hard for him to crack....EVEN if Pietro is out.

This move has been completely over-analyzed.

Even if Pietrangelo holds out until the start of the season, the Blues defense is still stacked. I still don't think Whitney fits into that top 6.

Maybe a team like Philly is willing to throw money around, but the Blues are not that type of organization.

So Hitchcock can have a full camp roster with the amount of d-men he wants and you also need to have a certain amount of veteran players playing in preseason games which Whitney provides.

And because why not? There are literally zero negatives to giving him a tryout.

I'm not saying an invite is bad. I was more responding to the fact that he thought Whitney would make the team.

He has been an overpaid train wreck for the last two seasons. I predict he signs for league minimum with the Blues after camp, plays a hand full of games, and is out of the NHL next season.
