Disappointing.

No way Klefa or Nurse make the big club any time soon with play like that.

I liked Gernat and Maracin much more.

So yeah... Maybe we should actually watch klefbom play before we start saying he's better then other teams prospects AINEC.

Not worried at all about 1 rookie game, thats why these games exsist.

Welp, there wasn't many positives, that's for sure.
The few positives were Marincin and Roy. You can tell that Marincin has benefitted from having a pro season under his belt, very solid all around game from him tonight and Roy looks dynamic, very nice speed and puck handling ability.
Khaira, Chase and Ewanyk had some nice stretches.
Other than that, a bunch of meh all around.

As far as Nurse is concerned, lets just say that he has a long way to go. You can see the physical tools but he looked clueless out there but i'm sure that he'll be fine in time.
Klefbom looked more comfortable as the game went along after a really subpar 1st. It's not too surprising that he was rusty after going almost a full calendar year without playing competitive hockey.

Our forward corp here, most of them seem to be 3rd/4th liners at best so I'm not too upset.

the D on the other hand...ugh wth?!?!?!

I'm going to try not to draw any conclusions after that dog's breakfast of a game, going in my stated goal was that Klefbom would get through it healthy, and by all accounts he has done just that. I would expect he'll be MUCH better with that first game out of the way.

That being said, I have to say that Darnell Nurse looked flat out terrible out there...and his hangdog expression at the end of the game said it all about what he thought about his performance too.

I dunno guys, for a #7 overall pick he looks extremely rough around the edges. For a supposed '5 tool' guy, it'd sure be nice to see even one of them every now and then.

Hopefully he takes a big step this year, because right now he looks a LONG way off from being much of anything.

Yeah, Monahan showed some play-making ability as well.

You'd have to be dumb to think Klefa or Nurse was going to make the team out of camp this year. Reality check time for some people.

Gotta cut his some slack, this is the first game he's played in quite a while. I'd be shocked if he doesn't get better, and better as we go along.

Well, I just remember a lot of people ******** all over that pick. I still think they left some better players on the table, but if this game is any indication of what he could translate to the NHL, then it'll have looked pretty good on Calgary's scouts.

I thought Marco Roy was the best Oilers prospect in the game tonight.

It was interesting to see that they kept Khaira at center. Him, Chase, and Roy look like some promising forward prospects. Especially Chase in the last round.

Grades based on expectations:

Marco Roy: A- - Oilers' best forward all night. Didnt put up any points but showed some legit top-6 F potential today with the way he handled the puck and read the play. Not bad for an 18yr old

Jujhar Khaira: B - one of the better F's, and showed some decent skating/puck-handling ability. Good to see at age 19, and hopefully will improve in the WHL.

Kale Kessy: D - I mean my expectations were pretty low here - but at the very least I thought this dude would hold his own. He was Abney bad - just like I've been clamoring about for months since the Rieder trade.

Marincin - B+ Didn't expect him to be the best Dman in the game, but he was. Looked solid at both ends of the ice and could turn some heads at the main TC.

Gernat - B His offensive potential shone through and he was our most engaged Dman in the offensive zone. Still looks weak defensively, and a bit of a while away from competing for an NHL spot.

Nurse/Klefbom - D - I'm not even going to bother explaining why

He looks like a solid player. He was arguably the best center available and they took him.

If Kessy can improve his skating to the level of even an AHL player and works on nixing his almost acute ability to be in the most useless spot on the ice at any given time, then I'll recant my earlier statements.

Agreed. His ability to play both sides of the ice wasn't embellished.

Ok that sucked but it was great to watch hockey again:

To summarize over the whole game:

Disappointed:
Nurse- Has some great tools just looked off out there.
Kessy- I still think he's what we need but didn't get to show off his game today.
Miller- I expected more from the vet.

Impressed:
Chase- What a rat, in a good way. I really liked his gumption today.
Houck- Hounded the puck, and played hard. Got robbed of a goal.
Gernat- Silky offence and great instincts today.
HM: Ewanyk, Khaira, and Musil.

Really Impressed:
Roy- Wow, I know I'm supposed to temper my expectations but damn he looked good.
Marincin- Same with Marincin and he impressed me in the opposite zone I expected I know he has offensive punch but he was looking good in his own zone today.

Tempered Expectations everyone it is just rookie camp.

Those are my thoughts.

This x1000. Hockey is still hockey. Even if it's bad, it's still hockey.

Edit: Also, I think one person you left off of the 'Impressed' list was Khairah. He showed a lot of glimpses.

Losing Rajala to Europe and not having any of Zharkov/Yakimov/Slepyshev over here really took a big chunk of offensive talent that the Oilers rookies could've used today.

From what I saw of Roy though, he looked pretty good. Someone to keep an eye on for sure. Too bad he often looked like he was playing by himself out there.

In this thread: Posters make snap judgements on the future NHL careers based on one rookie game.

I don't think there's ever been a more talked about "prospect for prospect" trade than this one.
