Cowen signs 4 years at 3M$ per... is it just me or is that an absolute steal by the Sens?
I'll call it a steal, just in the sense that I'd personally have gambled more term and $$$ on Cowen. I mean, it's "fair" in the sense that Cowen hasn't actually done too much yet, and has the injury history and all. But I'd have thought the Cowen camp could have argued for more of a 2-year bridge deal if they were going to settle for something "fair" on the basis of what he has shown. His real market value is in what his upside represents, and I think teams looking at his size and talent level would have/should have thrown bigger numbers his way in the hopes/expectation that he fulfills that upside.
I wonder if he rejected many offer sheets, or if NHL GMs are really just towing the line to that degree.
There will always be teams, like the Oil and the Blues who skip the bridge contract...unfortunate it sets a standard of sorts...these teams need a kick in the pants for allowing this to happen...unless you have a Crosby or Malkin on your hands, I don't see how you can take a kid from a ELC of 850k to 6.5M??
Blues wanted eight years and Pietrangelo wanted four or five years...
And again...my timing ROCKS! After praising Trouba 10 minutes ago, Trouba not reading the play well, gets caught giving his team a 2 on 1 against, looking slow trying to come back but his goalie saves him....
I just don't see what he does to warrant that type of term AND money. He could be a top dman, but he also could be a jbo.
Obviously they have confidence in the guy, and everyone (including fans) are happy but seems like he received a contract a top 5 gets, and I don't think he'll be top. top 10, probably.
who's in front? behind him? cap wise??
I already showed you, though, that (while the combination still represents a relatively rare level of commitment/confidence) his pay/cap hit puts him in the 10-30 range of the NHL right now. Dude has over 200 NHL games under his belt. Don't know how much more of him you have to see before you're convinced, but I am. St. Louis is. I think most people you talk to around here will agree that at least the cap hit is fair enough.
Here's a link (that I hope stays sorted) to the top 50 defenseman salaries for '13/14. You can change the drop-down to cap hit if you like. You'll find AP @ #31 for salary, tied @ #8 for cap hit with Phaneuf and Karlsson. Even "total" salary puts him 8th right now behind the deals for Weber, Suter, Keith, Campbell, and Doughty, tied with Chara and Karlsson.
