I'll call it a steal, just in the sense that I'd personally have gambled more term and $$$ on Cowen. I mean, it's "fair" in the sense that Cowen hasn't actually done too much yet, and has the injury history and all. But I'd have thought the Cowen camp could have argued for more of a 2-year bridge deal if they were going to settle for something "fair" on the basis of what he has shown. His real market value is in what his upside represents, and I think teams looking at his size and talent level would have/should have thrown bigger numbers his way in the hopes/expectation that he fulfills that upside.

I wonder if he rejected many offer sheets, or if NHL GMs are really just towing the line to that degree.

Had to be in order to lock down his entire 20s. And even still, as it stands today, he's what, only the 10th highest cap hit among defensemen (31st in salary)?

He's a top 10-30 defenseman right now, let alone the next 7 years.

The jeans fit around him and that's it.

The real problem with legs like that is that you're always worried about crushing your own nuts.

I just don't see what he does to warrant that type of term AND money. He could be a top dman, but he also could be a jbo.

Obviously they have confidence in the guy, and everyone (including fans) are happy but seems like he received a contract a top 5 gets, and I don't think he'll be top. top 10, probably.

who's in front? behind him? cap wise??

Even better is that the Sharks used that pick to move up and select...Logan Couture.

The Leafs conceivably could have had Couture or Eller with that pick and ended up with Toskala instead.

Doughty 7
Karlsson 6.5
Pietrangelo 6.5
Ekman-Larsson 5.5
Myers 5.5

IMO it's a decent contract for the Blues.

Blues wanted eight years and Pietrangelo wanted four or five years...

As mentioned, they skipped the bridge contract...some teams do that...unfortunately, and it creates alot of unbalanced deals with other teams who want to use a bridge contract...

Damn that Myers contract is crazy. Decent defenseman but his play continues to drop off year after year since his big rookie campaign. Buffalo desperately needs him to regain rookie form.

While I do know that both weren't born in the same city (not that it always mean anything...), do anybody know if Michael is related to A.J. McCarron?

Expensive and definitely not without risk but worth it for AP. Again 5 for 25 would've been great for us but...

In all honesty....not really watching. Trouba is a favorite of mine since prior his draft year so I'll say yes...without watching it. That's called being TOTALLY biased.

And again...my timing ROCKS! After praising Trouba 10 minutes ago, Trouba not reading the play well, gets caught giving his team a 2 on 1 against, looking slow trying to come back but his goalie saves him....

I already showed you, though, that (while the combination still represents a relatively rare level of commitment/confidence) his pay/cap hit puts him in the 10-30 range of the NHL right now. Dude has over 200 NHL games under his belt. Don't know how much more of him you have to see before you're convinced, but I am. St. Louis is. I think most people you talk to around here will agree that at least the cap hit is fair enough.

Here's a link (that I hope stays sorted) to the top 50 defenseman salaries for '13/14. You can change the drop-down to cap hit if you like. You'll find AP @ #31 for salary, tied @ #8 for cap hit with Phaneuf and Karlsson. Even "total" salary puts him 8th right now behind the deals for Weber, Suter, Keith, Campbell, and Doughty, tied with Chara and Karlsson.
