With the final roster set, are the Oilers over the cap?

Looking at the cap payroll for everyone, I think the Oilers are over.

Justin Schultz $3,775,000.00
Nick Schultz $3,500,000.00
Ladislav Smid $3,500,000.00
Andrew Ference $3,250,000.00
Jeff Petry $1,750,000.00
Anton Belov $1,525,000.00
Denis Grebeshkov $1,500,000.00
Philip Larsen $1,025,000.00
Corey Potter $775,000.00
Taylor Hall $6,000,000.00
Jordan Eberle $6,000,000.00
Ales Hemsky $5,000,000.00
Sam Gagner $4,800,000.00
David Perron $3,812,500.00
Nail Yakupov $3,775,000.00
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins $3,775,000.00
Boyd Gordon $3,000,000.00
Ryan Smyth $2,250,000.00
Ben Eager $1,100,000.00
Jesse Joensuu $950,000.00
Mike Brown $736,666.67
Wil Acton $680,000.00
Steve MacIntyre $625,000.00
Ryan Hamilton $600,000.00
Mark Arcobello $600,000.00
Devan Dubnyk $3,500,000.00
Jason Labarbera $1,000,000.00
Buried
Ryan Jones $575,000.00

This totals $69,379,167. Since a lot of it is bonus money they can exceed the cap by 7.5% making the Oiler cap effectively $69,122,500. This puts them 256,667 over the cap. Someone has to go on LTIR, or Jones needs to be picked up. Otherwise the Oilers have a cap issue on thier hands.

I'm also getting concerned that the bonus money out there is with players who have a reasonable shot at hitting the bonus' so they may be forced to pay that back next year out of their cap and it could be as much as 4.8 million.

Injuries to Gagner and RNH allow the Oilers some flexibility. Without bonuses they are under by a lot. I assume the kids will hit some bonuses, but probably not enough to put us over the cap this season.

You have like 27 skaters there... of course they are over in that case... Oilers will have about $2.4M capspace with a 23 man roster

They can probably call Gagner's LTIR as it will be at least 10 games/24 days, but I'm not sure they want to commit RNH or the others to that timetable. Also the rules around LTIR are really weird to understand, but ultimately we don't recover the cap space prorated to the games missed by the player, we're just allowed to go over the cap by a set amount based on what we are over at the time of the injury. So we're still on the hook for the full 4.8 of Sam's. So the cap situation is still of some concern as we have to pay his replacements while he's out.

But they have 27 players right now to deal with the injuries. I re-read the LTIR stuff and I think Gagner's injury saves us as his qualifies for LTIR, but I don't think the others do. Either way, I think people need to realize our cap situation isn't as rosy as they think it is.

Unless the Oilers win the cup this year there is no way the combo of Nuge, J.Schultz and Yakupov makes over 6M combined.

Also, Gagner on LTIR brings in a lot of flexibility.

This team can easily take on another 5M contract. It is not 'rosy' but we are not over the cap limit.

Why can't Nuge be put on LTIR until he heals from his surgery?

I just want to know why capgeek had Whitney and Smithson still listed as UFA's? We moved on, delete them already. I see they also have Eager buried which is odd.

Only if they trade the 5M contract before activating Gagner. Maybe they can get away with a 2M contract, but certainly not 5M. That or they'd have to assume no one hits any of their bonus'.

If we are certain he will miss at least 10 games/24 days then he can. But they make it sound like there is a chance he could be back sooner. That said LTIR doesn't give cap savings, it's just a temporary means to allow you to exceed the upper limit. You still are on the hook for his full cap hit the minute he returns including the cap hit accrued during the injury.

I think we'll be fine, LTIR will save us some with Gagner, his replacement is unlikely to make what he'd make...

plus once Grebs and Potter get back, they'll likely be sent down or maybe traded which would save us some more cap space as well.

I think the bigger issue is next year... I was concerned about it already and I know others were saying we'd have a ton of room with the cap going up... but if Hemsky keeps playing like he is. We could easily bring him back for 5 million or something. Which could put us in trouble next year.

Hemsky isn't going to be brought back for 5mil. Not unless there is a real jump in the cap. Even then Hemsky does enough to look good for 5mil, he's going to want term. Oil can't afford term.

imo both jones and grebs will have to end up as buried contracts costing only 1.15 million combined

Even with bonuses, and no LTIR, it makes our 23 man roster approx 2 million shy of the cap

Hard to imagine another team in the league signing multiple UFA's just to waive them a few months later. In grebs' case it really messes up up OKC's depth chart too. Dumb.

if he is a big part of the success and we are sitting in 7/8th at the deadline dont you think there will be pressure to hold out?

say hes #1 RW all season and 2nd in team scoring? (based on starting position, if he stays healthy this is a legitimate possibility)

If MacT (and Katz by extension) are willing to bury contracts in OKC... (like Eager last season and Jones this season)... there's no problem with cap space. There are several smallish contracts that they can move down and be cap compliant. Combined with cap room from IR players, I don't really see a problem.

They even have room to pick up a waiver player if a decent one becomes available.

I'm not saying the Oilers are rolling in cap space for next season... especially if RNH, JSchultz and Belov hit some/all their bonuses but I think with the cap limit almost certain to rise, the team will still be OK.

Potter is done. 770K off the cap
One of Grebs or Larsen will be sent down. 1-1.5M off the cap.
Arcobello after Hopkins and Gagner are healthy. 600K off the cap
Hamilton or Eager will be sent down. 600K-1.1M off the cap
Hopkins or Gagner can be put on the LTIR. 7.8M off of the cap.

We're in fine shape.
