Also have N.Schultz off the books.

I don't really see the issue at this point to be honest.
Not a problem either year... if we smart...

2013-14

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Perron-Gagner-Yakupov
Jones-Gordon-Hemsky
Smyth-Lander-Omark
Brown Joensuu

Smid-Petry
Ference-J. Schultz
N. Schultz-Belov
Grebeshkov

Dubnyk
Labarbera

==$2.448M capspace

2014-15:

Hall-RNH ($5.5M)-Eberle
Perron-Gagner-Yakupov
? ($3M)-Gordon-? ($3M)
? ($1M)-? ($1M)-? ($1M)
Joensuu, ? ($1M)

Smid-Petry ($3.5M)
Ference-J. Schultz ($4.25M)
Marincin/Klefbom-? ($1.5M)
? ($1M)

Dubnyk ($4.5M)
? ($1.5M)

Assuming cap $70M... I am counting $67.7M... totally reasonable... in fact same space as this year... no bonus magic needed... any higher cap and we are swimming...

What should we think of the Cowen contract?

I figure Smid is a way better player and given the money we're shelling out to Smid compared to what Ottawa is giving Cowen I consider us very very lucky.

Thoughts?

agreed, I think in 2-3 years the Smid contract will look like a steal. hopefully they can lock up Petry to simliar terms.

If the cap goes up to 70M, players will want more money in general... Nuge will get at least what Eberle is making 6M. I hope Dubnyk makes more than 4.5M... if we get him for 4.5M that means he had a bad year... look at what Smith and Crawford got this offseason.

Same goes for Schultz and Petry... if the cap goes up, everyone gets paid more... and 4.25 for Schultz for sure may be a bit optimistic... he's basically making that already.

Brenden Morrow has to be the most underrated old guy ever. He's not even close to an option for the AHL. The guy is still a quality middle 6 forward, ffs he had 14 points in 15 regular season games for the Pens. He played with a split kneecap in the playoffs, so his speed is being underrated. Morrow might sign for a million or so, but i doubt it. From what i've gathered he's waiting for a preferred suitor to clear some cap space.

Looks like Gilbert to FLA on PTO. Smart move by FLA.

He was very bad for Dallas to start the year as well. At his age you never know what you are going to get. I'd take a chance on him, but I'm not shelling out big money for the guy.

He's still a better gamble than Clowe/Clarkson were at their prices

taping a stick to a pylon and throwing it out on the ice might end up being a better option than either of those two players when you consider their contracts.

Smid is on $3.5 million while Cowen is on $3.1 million. I think Smid is a little better than Cowen (but not by that much). I think the contracts are pretty much exactly right.

Tough question with Nuge:

1) Do you try and bridge him now on an extension for 2 years or so at around 3.5M per?

2) Do you wait for the season to end before signing him?

3) Do you give him the 8 year, 6M per contract to lock him up for a good while?

1.no
2.yes
3.depends on this season but he is most likely going to get locked up.

Hey now, Clarkson attempted to get in a fight and scored in the shootout tonight. TSN was drooling over him during the highlights.

With the rumors of MacT/Eakins wanting an "Anthony Peluso" type enforcer, I wonder if they'd look to grab Brandon Mashinter off waivers(if NYR puts him on).

His fight vs. Cam Janssen reminded me of him last night.

Big kid(6'4'' 220lbs), is only 24, has put up numbers in the AHL(15-20 goals/year) and can definitely throw 'em.

If he can skate I'd be 100% down with that. I recall his name from past Penticton tournaments.

Here is is getting the decision on one tough SOB Ryan Reaves.

It says on the tale of the tape that he is 6'4" and 235lbs.

I know we have no room for him but I'd love to snag Cundari on waivers. I have a feeling he's going to turn into a solid bottom pairing defenceman who can chip in a little offence.

Wow looking more into Mashinter's stats it looks like he really came around last year when playing for the NYR's farm team with 10-9-19 in 35 games! Even more impressive is that their team wasn't a high scoring club. Unless he skates like he has concrete in his skates this should be a no brainer pick-up for us.

@tweetneal: Chris VandeVelde apparently has a legit shot at making the Flyers roster. http://t.co/gwvg967zEg

I say try to lock him up at 5mil for an extended term

Good for him, I wish him all of the best there. I'm not sure how much of a downgrade he'd be on a guy like Acton TBH.

And tell me why he should take only $200K more than Gagner for long term? He'd be wiser to play the season out and then cash in. If we won't pay him $6 million I'm sure that there are a few teams that'd be more than happy to OS him leaving us with Gagner as our 1C and Gordon as our 2C.
