Philadelphia invites Hal Gill to training camp

per Fluto Shinazawa

Ex-Bruin Hall Gill invited to Flyers camp.

I'm little surprised, not that I don't think Gill isn't a good player, but because it seemed like the Flyers blueline was pretty much already set.

I really don't see the purpose of this. They already have tonnes of mediocre that can fill in for the 3-5 roles, but none that is true top pairing any more. Why sign more of what you already have?

Because you can't invite #1 defenseman to a camp tryout.

Gill would certainly be decent as a #7, on a one year contract.
Can't hurt to take a look at him.

Forwards can train some breakaways and get some confidence by skating past gill on each practice.

So pumped. We needed an offensive wizard on the blue line.

Well, I don't see anyway that he would be able to outplay the likes of Coburn, Mez, Schenn, etc that are already occupying those 3-5 spots. So at best, he would be an OK #6 D; and more likely he would be sitting on the bench most nights. I guess he would be of use when injuries hit, that's the only practical purpose that I can think of.

Steit is Flyers number 2 defenceman? Where is Grossman in that ranking?

The reason I find it a puzzling move is they already have 8 NHL defencemen under contract
-Timonen
-Coburn
-Schenn
-Strait
-Grossman
-Meszaros
-Gervais
-Gustafsson

then they have guys on the cusp of being NHLers
-Bourdon (Who may have finally recovered from concussion issues)
-Lauridsen (contract becomes a 1-way in 2014-15)
-Manning (who plays dreadful in the AHL but looks good with the Flyers)
-Morin (who is a high 1st rounder and Philly will be looking to sooner than later)

So, unless the Flyers are moving out a defenceman, or putting Gervais on waivers, this is pretty much an impossible situation for Gill.

it would stun me to see him make the team unless some disastrous scenario arose or the Flyers traded a defenseman. i assumed he would retire but i guess he just wants one last shot?

I don't get it. Unless they're expecting one of Grossman or Schenn to start the season injured, I don't understand how Gill would enter into the equation at all.

He looked so out of place on the Preds last season. Glad to see him get another shot but I feel bad for the team that feels they have a spot for him.

I noticed a bunch of recent proposals of a dman to Phi shot down by Flyers fans who said their team didn't nead a 5-6 dman.

I guess they were right. They needed a 7-8.

Flyers fans have my deepest condolences. Nobody deserves a D-core bad enough to warrant a Hal Gill tryout.

ya cant teach big and hal gil is definitely a veteran presence for the locker room. be a perfect mentor for our young developing d down on the phantoms. cheap depth is always a plus its not as if theyre looking to put him in the top 4

He's magic on the PK.

If he sticks on the Flyers, he'll have played on both sides of great rivalries:

Toronto-Montrťal
Boston-Montrťal
Philadelphia-Pittsburgh

Toronto-Boston?

Nashville would be an outlier.

Don't see where Gill will fit or why Philadelphia would need him. But I hope they go for him as he's over the hill and not that great anymore.

They already have too many defencemen and Gill isn't really better than anything they have right now. I highly doubt he lasts long at camp.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just so he can keep his fitness up whilst he looks for a team. If he doesn't get an NHL team could he drop to the AHL if he was really desperate enough for a team?
