That wasn't the whole story though ..

Blake was about to become a UFA for the first time .. He said he would not sign any extention or agree to a contract with any team and he wanted to test the UFA market first.

It was also a ploy to try to stop any trade as he loves living in South Cal ..

The Leafs bowed out of the trade bidding ring because the asking price was too high without the guarantee of a long term return of an extention.

We could never have matched what Colorado gave up for Blake anyway. Leafs fans were mad that we never got him, but we never had a chance.

I guess our package was the same as usual Kaberle, Antropov and 1st and roster player ..

Colorado once they offered Deadmarsh was unbeatable by Toronto .. I agree

I don't think Blake or his wife wanted to come to T.O.

That's probably true .. Since she is a LA gal .. Maybe they have smartened up by now

So its looking more and more like Leetch is the best choice unless people think Gonchar is .. I know he likes the town because of the Russian community and we have his defense partner in Klee.

Maybe its a strategy in the new NHL that with limited resourses the players you spend the most on % wise need to be the best offensive players .. So when you fill you teams with rookies and depth players then you still generate maximum offense with your vets .

I'm pretty sure I heard Bill Watters claim that there was a deal in place, but the Leafs didn't go through cuz Blake was did not want to stay or commit.

I think the Leafs have to keep what they can. This is, in my opinion, their best chance for a cup in a long time, but only if Belfour can hold up.

I say you go for it. Sundin aint getting any younger.

I know a lot of people want to rebuild, but frankly, it's 10 years. Consider where the Leafs will have to fall from. I think the Leafs' best hope is to just do what Detroit has been doing. Restocking retirees with younger UFA's, weening youngsters in year after year, but not a full blown rebuild by any means.

I think with Coca Cola, Stajan, Steen, Antropov, and other young guys, you've got enough youth for next year and perhaps the year after. Keep adding with the draft but no need to blow the Leafs' Cup hopes by rebuilding. Frankly, I think the years of the 'rebuild' are beyond us. Especially for a team like the leafs.

Roberts and Nieuwendyk

I think it would definatly be worth bringing these two back, if, and I mean IF, they can both come in under/around 4 million for the both of them.

Leetch
Nieuwendyk
Roberts

the 3 players I would want re-signed first.

Mogilny and Domi would be nice but can be replaced.

I agree with you their we can replace Mogilny and Domi but Roberts brings in some good veteran leadership and Nieuwendyk is just such a great player and we need to keep him and Leetch is a top defencemen and he's a keeper.

BTW- Why don't you guys have avatars here?

A temporary measure to handle the heavy traffic due to the big announcement.

What our are chances of actually re-signing Leetch? Obviously id like too see him back. To be honest id like to see them all back, but that may be unlikely.

Three of these forwards have something positive to contribute to the team even if they are past their "best buy" dates and can be signed for reasonable sums.

Alexander the great however would be foolish to continue a hockey career that could jeopardize his future mobility. And the team would be foolish to sign Alex when he will be a sad shadow of his former brilliance.
