I'd be cool if they signed Cleary. I think he would be a prototypical third liner for this team. Cleary-Couturier-Read/Simmonds would likely be a tough line to play against, but also one that could still put up some points.

Wait so this is official? Is that contract the real deal? I don't have a problem with the length or the NTC, but the $2.75 seems like a bit much. I was thinking more like $1.5 million if he were signed.

I hope Hextall gives Homer a two handed slash across his ankle this morning. Stupid is as stupid does. Jesus.

Cleary, who had played for the Wings since 2005, remained hopeful to stay in Detroit, but told the Free Press shortly before midnight that “I’m going to Philly.” Cleary said he’d have more to say later today.
Cleary was offered three years and $2.75 million per season from the Flyers, though they cannot make the deal official until the end of the month because they are already over the salary cap

Wings fans really seem glad to get rid of him. Why not keep Gags instead if we wanted another vet?

Unwilling to battle in the corners. ?

I know what cleary brings. He is a 3rd liner who you can trust to play against the other teams top lines every night. As well as eat up pk min giving our top guys a rest, like giroux.

They can't make the Cleary signing official until after they put Pronger on LTIR. It's possible they had to wait for the same for Gagne, although if I were him I'd say screw and go somewhere where I'd play more.

You guys, we made it so close this summer without doing something completely asinine.

This had better because they have a deal in place of something like B. Schenn and Read for Alex Pietrangelo or something.

Grr.

Sigh. People defending this deal are forgetting how Cleary played the past two seasons. Old and extremely slow.

I will wait to pass judgment until the final roster is set for the season. No sense getting your panties in a twist until everything shakes out

Homer obviously just checked the playoff boxscores for Cleary and nothing else.

I mean, he is still an ok player, 30-35 points on the third line, but he is not the player he was a few years ago from the (limited, maybe 10 games) I saw of the wings last year.

I am ok with the signing itself... if it was for 1-2 years, no ntc and 1 million less.

The Flyers are already over the cap and Holmgren is overpaying for a washed up third liner.

Philly fans don't deserve to be embarrassed like this.

I'm a lot more on the fence with this one than most of you. The guys compete level is very high. Apparently he is great locker room guy and will bring some much needed vet presence to the forwards. BUT, 3 years at $2.75 is very expensive indeed. I'll wait to pass judgement till game 1 of the regular season.

I'm not really all that upset with this deal. It was pretty clear that they needed to bring in a couple of forwards who are defensively responsible, especially in the bottom six. Stick him on a line with Couturier and Read or on the fourth line with Hall and Talbot and he'll fit right in.

You can't pay $2.75 million a year for a fourth liner who is almost 35.

This is a ridiculous signing, and I hope everyone who was involved with it gets fired.

I don't like the term/lenght though.
That's my point. They didn't sign him for straight up 4th line cleanup minutes. He's gonna get his time, and that means someone else we probably don't expect is gone.
