Shootout Lineup

Borrowed idea from the main board. Did we do this yet?

I go with:
Briere
Afinogenov
Satan
Vanek
Dumont

1st - Maxim Afinogenov
2nd - Thomas Vanek (If he's on the team)
3rd - Miroslav Satan
4th - Daniel Briere
5th - J.P. Dumont

edit: looks like me and KB think a lot alike heh.

Satan
Vanek
Briere
Roy
Drury

If Afinogenov isn't a "finisher" why would you want him in a shootout?
Drury was brought in to be the clutch goal scorer, so here is his chance.

I'll take Max's quick hands in a one-on-one situation. Drury scores clutch goals in regular game situations, but shootouts are different. They're dumbed down to just Max and a goalie, where he should be able to excel.

I don't think it's so much that Max is not a finisher but rather that he fails to utilize his teammates in offensive situations. His hands, speed, and creativity are top-notch, but he often attempts to do too much himself. In this sense, he earns the "can't finish" label only because he can't finish plays he should have never attempted. In a one on one situation, like KB said, you have to go with Max.

I'm going to assume that Satan is no longer with the team:

1 - Briere
2 - Afinogenov
3 - Vanek
4 - Hecht
5 - Dumont

what about Kotalik? surely if he is on the team you have to give him a spot.

Assuming Miro is gone...

Hecht is the current Sabre I think most highly of, but I don't think he's a shootout guy.

I know I'm gonna get skewered for this, but I'd like to see what Connolly would do in a shootout. IMO, after Max, he's the most agile skater and stickhandler on the team -- he just hasn't (by a damn sight) put his whole game together.

Dumont
(Satan) Connolly (Campbell, Kotalik)
Afinogenov
Vanek (Drury)
Briere

We can certainly roll a bunch of people in and out of the shootout lineup -- I think we're fine in this regard.

1. Hecht - he has a deadly wrister. I always think about that goal Hecht scored against Detroit when Miller got smoked for like 7 goals.

2. Afinogenov - If he can't be counted on as one of 5 shootout guys he shouldn't be in the NHL.

3. Drury - If he is the Captain he has to be on the ice when the game is on the line

4. Vanek - if he's on the team

5. Briere

Satan/Kotalik - not on team

I'd consider bringing a player out of retirement as a shootout specialist. Rick Martin? Danny Gare? Mike Gartner? There's probably dozens that can still excel at the shootout.

How about LaFontaine? Or even Perrault. You gotta imagine these guys could teach the players a thing or two.

LaFontaine would be great. Perreault isn't exactly in the best of shape anymore, but this might be an incentive for him to hit the gym. Maybe they could let every team have one retired player be allowed to participate in the shootout. Their only payment would be 6 free season tickets and they wouldn't count against the roster. I think shootouts are pretty much a joke anyways, so they might as well get maximum entertainment value out of it.

Couldn't hurt. Why not just expand the roster by one and let the team have a DS (Designated Shooter). If we give a roster spot to an enforcer, why not do the same for a shootout specialist?

LaFontaine would be my choice of former Sabres.

I'd also consider putting Hasek, after he "retires", on the bench as the backup goalie/shootout specialist. I don't think anyone was better at defending the goal one on one than Dominik.

Screw Hasek. Remember he's a "Red Wing for life"? Or whatever the hell he said at the Red Wings Stanley Cup Parade. I'd rather not see that lunatic behind the bench. I understand what you're sayin' though and the logic is good.

I understand what you all are saying about the shootout specialists, and it would be entertaining, but it would also turn the event into a complete farce.

Why not put a grizzly bear on skates and throw him out there to maul the goalie? that would probably be pretty entertaining too

(I prefer the NL over the AL in baseball as well..let the players play)

Although I'm not strongly opposed to it, determining the outcome of a team game with a skills competition already is a complete farce. It's just a shameless attempt to add excitement and bring in more fans which the NHL badly needs. A shootout doesn't determine which is the better team on a given night. They could bring in fans from the stands for the shootout, and I wouldn't think any less of it.

This is considering no Satan.

Other intriguing prospects to have for the shootout - Bartovic with his blazing speed and good hands, Kalinin with his surprisingly good mobility and shot, and if we still are putting up with his crap, Campbell.

While I desparately try to get the image of "good hands" and "Bartovic" in the same sentance out of my head, I will now post my shootout lineup.

1. Hecht
2. Roy
3. Dumont
4. Vanek
5. Briere
