Good job on the cap hit, but still wont matter if Hodgson is Stafford. Heck, people even hated ROy here even with his great contract.

WHOA. Was expecting him to sign at any moment, but with how this dragged on I was fairly sure it'd have to end up being a bridge contract. I wonder if Darcy waited for Kadri, etc to sign and then put two deals on the table, a bridge contract with modest salary based on other deals, and this.

I love it. It's a risk, but if Cody continues to improve it'll be a very good price in short order, which will help a lot when we have to make decisions about re-signing other young players and bringing in veteran help. The potential downside is obvious, but I admire the commitment and calculated risk at play here. Cody is extremely important to this team short and long-term. With him in for the long haul, that's one less player who has to be fast-tracked or forced to play top 6 center. It helps Grigorenko, Larsson, Girgensons, etc break into roles more naturally, though the team is obviously still lacking in NHL-ready centers.

Great news that Cody will not miss any camp.

Isn't it 4.25, not 4.5?

It might be 4.25M AAV

Kyper might have got his numbers mixed

It will still be a good deal if he stays one-dimension but that one dimension improves.

$4.25 or $4.5 -- either way, this deal could/should be a GREAT deal for us in 2/3 years. LOVE it.

This is the 2013 version of the Roy deal, which turned out to be a steal for the middle years of it. Roy was better defensively at the time (and a touch older because of the lockout), but he was still a gamble. He'd just come off a pretty good offensive season but had been afforded the opportunity to feast on other team's bottom pairs. He'd been given easy assignments behind Briere and Drury.

I would have loved a bridge deal, but if you pay Cody $3M for two seasons, and then you owe him $6.5 in the next handful, it's not worth it. This may be more of a gamble, but at $4.25 million, I'm willing to take that gamble.

For sure. I hope they keep Vanek around to help take the pressure off of him though.

I'm not the biggest fan of Hodgson but this is a very reasonable contract.

@JeremyWGR: I just have a hard time with Hodgson getting 6/25.5 and Kadri getting 2/6. I'd rather have spent the 25.5 on offer sheet to Kadri.

Buffalo media.

...Toronto is a team that wants to load up now and as such has a definite salary structure that they weren't ready to blow on Kadri yet.

CoHo kind of sets the salary structure for the Sabres going forward. Two relatively different situations.

And besides, Toronto easily matches that offer and thanks us for doing the dirty work.

That's what you pay for more certainty. I'd rather pay $6.5M a couple years down the line and be happy knowing that my player is legitimately worth $6.5M.

I don't think we know what Hodgson is yet. He's in the same boat as Myers now. You gotta keep your fingers crossed for both of these guys. I'd have very much preferred the Kadri deal.

Haha. I love how they forget Buffalo would be giving away draft picks as well.

That still doesn't add up. It'd be $25.5 at that cap hit.
