I was hoping for a bridge contract after Myers, but that cap hit is good enough to justify the length. Good deal.

Fantastic deal. Better than I thought it would be per year.

White is such a dumbass. An offersheet big enough to steal Kadri would be more than Cody's contract, likely much more. Then of course we would lose picks.

I was looking for a bridge contract too but the terms are very good for the Sabres. Hodgson gets more money now plus security in case of injury. Vanek has a centre-who hopefully will pass it to him before he has to stop at the blueline. Kudos to Regier on this one.

What I would expect from fanboys - Hodgson's done NOTHING to deserve this contract, what he deserved was the same bridge contract Ennis and Kadri just got. You'd think how the Myers contract already looks dubious would have tempered Regier's grandiosity.

It is possible the contract turns out well, that's not the point - there was no need to gamble.

Right, because paying Hodgson his two-years-from-now market value (possibly without even marginal improvements in his game) is going to mean we won't be able to sign those big name free agents we've gotten so used to...

That's fine money for Hodgson. He's gonna reliably get 55-65 pts over an 80 game season, maybe more if he gels with the right linemates. Either way, I think he's a fine 2nd line center now, maybe he can turn into a 1a/1b type center. I don't think he'll ever be a bonafide 80+ pt a season guy, but he can be a solid 65+ guy very low risk.

gamble on what? if Hodgson remains a 40-50 pt player.... in 2 years, he'd be worth 4.25 million... how is this contract a gamble of any sort?

You sure slayed some fanboys there I don't see any fanboys in this thread, I certainly am not a Cody Hodgson fanboy.

"Deserves" is a word that is completely meaningless in negotiations and economics. He got it, that means more than some subjective "deserves" nonsense. It's a calculated risk, one that, if not with Hodgson then with another player, would at some point be necessary. You can't give everyone a bridge contract and then pay them market value down the line. You have to overpay some players when you have tons of cap flexibility so that you underpay them later on when it matters. Even if Hodgson only marginally improves, $4.5 will be a good cap hit to be locked into with the cap rising -- you know, when our touted pipeline of players starts in on second contracts and we need to bring in veterans to make the team competitive in the playoffs.

Just home... and I have to say I am impressed. $4.25M average for a guy already producing at a #2 center pace, signed long-term, is very good cost certainty for the team.

The cap will be up over $80m halfway through this contract. No quibble with the dollars.

Well played Darcy.

But oh wait...I thought Winter was a hardass agent that was going to bend the Sabres over? Suck it Paul Hamilton.

Eh, I obviously don't like the term, and I don't think he should have gotten more than Henrique after going down this path, but that's splitting hairs. At this point, all you can hope is that he outplays it. Good luck, kid.

Just saw this. Very reasonable contract. Fair to both sides Cost certainty long term. Good contract length. REMOVES A DISTRACTION () ... that was beginning to gather some steam.....

Well done DR.

I think he becomes a consistent top 30 center in the league if he is not already, and having a top 30 center in the league at 4.25 for 6 years is a deal that allows a team flexibility with the cap. Good young centers are hard to find, and when you have one then you keep them.

I read thru the thread expecting to see a few posters doing the equivalent of this ....

And I wasn't disappointed

Good fair deal for a nice long term. Obviously Regier believes in him, his development, commitment and dedication to improving.

with the direction of contracts... it's very easy to see Sabres fans parading this around as the best contract in the league in 2 years...

I would be mad about going this far out on a limb when they didn't have to but it's probably not going to matter in the long run.

Still enough room to sign Petro to a 6.2*2 deal >: D
