I find it funny to see people say he will be overpaid year 1 and 2. HA!

Have you looked around the league lately?

Lets look at the players who scored 32-35 points last season (I removed Malkin because he only played 31 games, all others played at least 46 games):

Rank (among centers) - Name - Points
19 Logan Couture 37 ($6,000,000/year extension)
20 Mikko Koivu 37 ($6,750,000/year)
21 Cody Hodgson 34 ($4,250,000/year)
22 Brad Richards 34 ($6,666,666/year)
23 Jeff Carter 33 ($5,272,727/year)
24 Tomas Plekanec 33 ($5,000,000/year)
25 David Krejci 33 ($5,250,000/year)
27 Tyler Seguin 32 ($5,750,000/year)
28 Mike Richards 32 ($5,750,000/year)
29 Patrice Bergeron 32 ($6,500,000/year extension)
30 Vincent Lecavalier 32 ($4,500,000/year)

Is it an obligation to say "they overpaid" every time someone is signed? Or that might not be a good idea?

Worst case scenario, he is paid what he is worth. 50 point players cost more than 4 million!

How can anyone say the Sabres overpaid here?

Seems like the Roy deal that gave the player the security of a long term deal and gives the team a core player locked up for a while at a cap hit that the player could reasonably outperform.

Win-win to me.

And he didn't miss any time on the ice at camp.

Kudos to Winter and Regier for getting this done.

What's with all the CAPS and horrific reaction to that??? Hodgson has shown to be a hard working kid with a good head on his shoulders. I've only seen him to be a well spoken person with zero hint of an attitude problem. If he continues to improve the way I think he will, then he'll be a #1 C or at worst a #2 C if Grigorenko or someone else comes along and lights it up. A top-two C that's good at both ends of the ice and shows maturity and a good work ethic usually gets at least an "A" if not the "C".

If he doesn't become the player I hope, then I would probably want to see someone else with the "C". Your response just doesn't make any sense, maybe because you didn't explain it beyond a smart ass comment.

Decent enough deal. I'm happy he's under contract.

He's not DARTH until he builds ya know a team that wins games. The only thing Regier "wins" are trades (that don't even lead to on ice success).

Wish the deal was for 4 even, but 4.25 is not bad at all. Now I wonder if Ennis gets the same deal, less or more next off season.

Keep these bargain contracts coming. After the ticket hikes and FA contracts, I was pretty sure we as fans were going to pay for of the owners money grab by ourselves. While we are still taking a hit, RFAs are taking a bigger hit because of the new CBA.

It is great that it got done. One less issue to deal with between now and opening day. Congrats CoHo.

The Darth thing isn't "wow Darcy just built a great team", the whole thing's specifically about him winning deals.

I'd imagine Ennis would get more with a 6 year deal, because IIRC a deal would be buying 2 more UFA years (he's a year older + it'd be one year later). He's also proven more thus far, at least in terms of consistent point production. A lot would depend on how this season goes, of course.

How does that = 4.5 M per season?

4.5M x 6 = 27M

I don't blame you for not reading the whole thread, but if you did, you'd see Kyper rather hilariously corrected his tweet... and then corrected the correction... and then that the correction. There were at least 4 of them I believe. Ultimately, he corrected himself to $4.25m x 6 = $25.5m, which was then independently confirmed.

He's terrible defensively as it stands. Well spoken though and has a great attitude, I can see him earning a letter on this young team in the near future.
