I'm just a hockey fan posting my opinion on a message board. I've never successfully run a pro hockey team. Busted, I guess. Didn't realize that was a requirement.
You ran afoul of the groupthink of this board. Shame on you. LOL. Don't worry. Pissing off 15 people isn't a big deal.
I think that you're right about CBJ fans, in general, being overly enthused about lower end talent. I qualify.I am a huge Derek MacKenzie fan. At the end of the day, you are correct in saying that he's a borderline NHLer. I guess when a team sucks for so long and has almost completely been devoid of high end talent (save for former #61), then one necessarily looks for players to root for who are standouts in their respective roles. For me, Dorsett and MacKenzie are the ones I gravitated toward. Boll has never really been one for whom I thought was anything more than the last player to have on one's roster.
Unfortunately, in the Jackets history, most of the biggest standouts have been role players who aren't going to win you championships as you have correctly pointed out. The fan base has had to set its individual bars pretty low to watch the slop which has masqueraded as NHL hockey for the vast majority of this mostly pathetic franchise's history. The bar is so low, that I'd guess that almost half of the regular posters on this board aren't completely disgusted with the presence of RJ Umberger on the team.
Keep posting your thoughts. I, for one, enjoy them.
I chastise because I only care about winning. I don't care about the slogans and the pr and the other nonsense. Today's NHL is all about skill, not "sandpaper" so it concerns me when I see the team make a blunder like the a Boll signing. "Hardworking" teams like JD's Blues cannot even compete come playoff time and I am concerned they are leading us in that direction.
As an example aside from Gabby, Ryan Johansen is our best most skilled prospect and he is constantly being bashed by fans and the team, along with the inane dispatch criticism... and Jared boll is being praised and extended. It is crazy to me.
Johan is the kind of player that could, potentially be a core piece to a contender, and boll is a guy who absorbs punches to the dome and wouldnt see the ice in a playoff series. Malhotra, Mackenzie, Pahlsson, etc...I'm tired of the expendable 3rd liners or guys like Boll that the organization and other fans seem to constantly fall in love with. I care about the CBJ getting a core skilled enough to win.
Its not just in Columbus its around the league. A player like Alex Semin gets trashed by a lot of fans and media and players like Brandon Prust are beloved.
You generally pay forwards based on their point production. When you start paying guys more because they fight or some other intangible those contracts usually always end up bad. Not smart to invest close to 2 million dollars per year to someone who averaged only 8 minutes per game last year. I thought Jarmo was smarter than this.
If this team really wants long term success, we have to stop getting so attached to the players that would be lucky to make the bottom line on other teams. Sure guys like MacKenzie and Boll give lots of effort every night, but are they really helping our team?
