Scott Laughton vs Bo Horvat

Which one is the better prospect? Laughton is older but which one has higher potential and likeliness of reaching it? Id appreciate it if Canuck and Flyer fans dont bicker.

Could a mod add a poll, Im on my phone and not able to do that ATM.

Don't see how anyone can answer this without it being a pure guess or homerism, due to their differing ages and stage in development. A lot will depend on how Horvat develops this year, as his draft year was better than Laughton's but then Laughton developed a lot last year. Too speculative at this point but Horvat is starting from a better spot than Laughton.

Both are very good prospects. Laughton is obviously older and more NHL ready, but Horvat probably has a higher ceiling.

Yeah, I think Horvat's going to end up being better.

It seems like the concensus is that Laughton is currently better, but Bo has a higher ceiling.

Ultimately, I feel like they'll end up similar players.

Will be interesting to track these guys as I drafted both in my keeper in their respective years.

Bo has the higher upside but the comparison is closer than most Nucks fans will care to admit. Horvat for me.

Very close IMO. I like Laughton a lot, I think he'll be a good 3c down the road. Same as Horvat.

All depends on what you think makes a better player. If it's goal scoring and points, then I think you can give it to Horvat if he's playing on the wing with either the Sedins or Kesler (gut feeling says he ends up on a line with Kesler). If you're looking for someone who you want out on the ice to win a crucial face off, kill a penalty or protect a one goal lead, Laughton will probably be that guy. I really don't know how to rate this one because while both players are very similar, gut feeling says the Canucks use Horvat at the wing as I don't think he's going to displace either Kesler or Sedin as one of the top two centers on the club.

Is it safe to say that Horvat plays more of a powerforward type game, not by definition, but he uses his strength to get into scoring areas down below the circles and almost bulls his way through defense?

Laughton doesn't really play that type of game, but he is really well rounded. I actually made this comparison before the draft.

I'd say their skill level is similar (taking into consideration Laughton has a year on Horvat)...I like Horvat's upside a bit more...but I've also watched him more than Laughton and I'm a Knights fan so that could skew my impression a bit.

Your characterization of Horvat is fairly accurate. I find watching him he plays with more aggression and tenacity than Laughton does. Not saying that's a good thing or bad thing...it's just my observation.

Id like the gaunce vs Laughton based on ages. I guess horvat and Laughton do make sense tho similar styles, Laughton is older so will be more of a reward sooner, but i think Horvat looks to have a higher celling.

I think Horvat has higher upside, but I think your hitting a key point here.

Horvat has a better body to handle the rigors of the game. He plays and thrives where the game is tough to play. Laughton is along the same lines, he just doesn't have the body to bull through the same things Horvat can.

Essentially, Horvat plays the 'heavy game' that Laughton can't, which in itself doesn't mean he's better or has higher upside, it just means when the going gets tough, his size allows him better ability to thrive.

Both good prospects that will help teams win.

This is a key point. I'd expect both prospects to be under-rated because they can do everything well, but likely won't pile up gaudy counting stats in the process.

In addition to those things stated throughout this thread, I think Laughton ends up being the better skater, whereas Horvat wins on strength. Both show strong leadership dynamics, two-way play and tremendous hockey sense.

I see Horvat as being a Corey Perry type player while Laughton will be a Mike Richards player. So it all comes down to preference imo while they'll be similarly talented players.

Laughton is a much better prospect than Guance, Bo was a better comparison.

Horvat by quite a bit. I just feel he has the higher upside.
