He's due 550k even if he plays in the AHL. I think LA would rather have the money and give that spot to a prospect.

Mitchell finally gone? He's going to the 4th line center so maybe he thinks that's below him?

Something Dater just lightly speculated on Twitter

Could be that John Mitchell wants more ice time, wasn't entranced by fourth-line role. We'll see what happens

I don't know why Dater thinks this has to do with Mitchell. To me seems like depth in other areas.

If I had to guess.. Malone isn't making the NHL and is going to play overseas instead. Cliche will take Malone's role in the AHL.

As I have made it known many times in the past, I wouldn't mind moving Mitchell.

Mitchell for a bottom 3 defenseman? Or Mitchell for a draft pick?

I like Mitchell and I think he gets too much flack on this site, but I also think he's expendable. Considering it is Roy's team now, there will be casualties for what he wants on the team and playing style.

Malone is already signed to a contract, if he's not on the Avs he'll be in Lake Erie, playing a big role with them and one of the first forward call-ups the Avs will have.

He only stands to make $65k in the AHL.

All I will say is this. Look at his minor team. This should explain some things.
And for those who can't read between the lines. He played in the QMJHL.
Which means both Roy and Tourigny should be very familiar with his skills.

My point is he's already signed, he cannot go overseas

He doesn't have to honor the contract.

*sigh*

I'm quite positive that if a player is under contract in either the NHL or KHL or one of the European leagues, then that contact has to be respected/honored for other leagues when attempting to sign.

That's why Kovy didn't just bolt to the KHL he waited until his "retirement" was official here and his contract was officially terminated.

But whatever you want to believe. Malone isn't going overseas

It would probably be best for him if he does honour it. Vikings still own his rights after his current deal expires.

Don't think he can leave anyways.

For all the dislike people have of Mitchell, he was a +5 on Avs last year.

Yeah, I think Mitchell stays. I think they'll be interested in rotating this fella with Bordy.

Meaningless stat.

Kobasew was +6, Hunwick was +4, and O'Brien was even.

I'm guessing Mitchell could garner a small return from a team looking for a 3C and Malone, Cliche, Heard, Olver etc can all fill what the Avs will need on the 4th line. I'd hope the Avs could send Mitchell to a team where he will get more ice time than he will here. He's a good guy and is in a contract year.

Or Stastny is heading to Edmonton for Hemsky and Klef

I thought both Kobasew and Hunwick were pretty decent last year, so I'm not surprised. O'Brien didn't play all that much.

Naturally there is quite a bit of randomness with +/- over a short season. You need your goalie to have a bit of luck and their goalie not to get a good number.

I just don't agree when people claim Mitchell is terrible defensively. He's slightly below average. I think he's got worse habits with the puck than without it. I'd rather have him on the fourth line than on the second line.

He's not terrible defensively. My problem with him is that he isn't physical, isn't very good defensively, and can't kill penalties. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a 4th line center but ideally I'd like him to bring one of those things to the table. I don't know how good Malone is but at least he's physical.

That's random. What possible indication has Malone given to bailing to Europe?

I would love to deal Mitchell. He's not a 4th line center and if you can get value for him, I say go for it.

Also, I never got the feeling he bought into being a fourth line player. When you have fourth liners that in the back of their head view themselves as more on the skill side of the hockey spectrum, it usually doesn't end up well.

I'd rather have a do-anything-to-play-in-the-NHL guy. That's why I was sorry to see Hendricks go. He personified that mentality.

I thought there was rumor of him signing there a few months ago. I guess not.
