It might be tough to bring him back next season if he excels this year. It would really depend on the increase in the cap and by how much.

Raymond and his agent must have strategically picked Toronto because of the potential exposure with 24/7 and the obvious regular media exposure. I know there are ties with Nonis in the past, but there had to be other teams with at least some interest.

Or maybe Raymond saw a core group of guys who he'd like to join? People need to remember this is a good locker room to come into, everyone is pretty much the same age group (19-25), and they get along well, all of them do, you can see it. Plus I think Liles is our oldest guy at like 30?

Not sure that would really play such a huge part considering how doubtful it is that teams around the league would use edited HBO footage and Toronto media coverage as a means of scouting a player.

I think that if teams didn't have to worry about the cap being lowered, Raymond would have probably gotten a shot with another team and probably wouldn't have needed to go looking for a PTO. His particular situation doesn't make him an interesting option for many teams. He came off a serious injury, played in a position that wasn't suited to his strengths and therefore struggled and then having a contract year where the cap was being lowered by millions of dollars...a lot riding against him. There are teams who are still trying to figure out how to get under the cap, there are teams that have the cap space but don't need to spend money on a player like Raymond and there are teams that work with internal caps and even if they were interested, Raymond hasn't exactly proven to be such a clutch player that you would go to your boss and say 'I know we're at our internal limit but we just HAVE to sign this guy'.

Raymond's best pal outside the Canucks is Joe Colborne, maybe that had some play.

Can still fit Franson in at ~$2m by dropping one of Colborne/Ashton/McLaren.
Liles at 3.8 looks just awful that far down the depth chart...

I remember there was a good reason (kinda) but why again didn't we just buy Liles out.

We never received a reason, but one would assume because he is/was a lot more tradable than Komisarek and actually can play well when he's in the lineup.

If we can get Franson signed, and eventually trade Liles away, then it will have been the right move.

He'll be back but obviously someone else would have to go.

Toronto made sense for a tryout for many reasons. It's safe to say its one of the best places for exposure period.

It's just a smart move to come here for those reasons, it kills 4 birds with 1 stone.

Glad to have him he is a great player who could very well be worth a mid to late first rounder. Getting that for free makes Some of the other moves feel less costly.

This signing will look really good once some suspensions/injuries inevitably happen (Clarkson, Lupul, etc).

Hope they can make room for Franson still... would hate to see the Leafs lose him.

Not because he is Leafs property now, but I was wondering why people said that Raymond is soft? As far as I remember he was one of the toughest Canuks in regular season and even more so in play-offs. At times he was their best player on forwards.
Again if I remember it correctly he scored one of the GWG either in game 1 or 2 with Bruins. Who knows, if not for his injury Vancouver might have one Cup to its name now.

Pretty sure Ranger is our Franson replacement... Rielly is back in jr no matter what in my opinion (of course i could be proven wrong)

Raymond signing is a great thing; replaces the speed we lost in the off season.

How did Raymond only get a tryout?

If you want one of the most logical things to spend a million dollars on, look no further than Mason Raymond. The guy is probably better suited than Kassian on the first line, eh Gillis?

The best thing that Clarkson's suspension may have done was Mason Raymond getting signed. Leafs will relish this signing for years to come!

I still cannot believe that Mason Raymond is a Maple Leaf, and that we got him for so little. Thank you Gillis!

Great start. Lovin it! GLG

There were a few people who didn't want him because they were worried he was going to block Ashton/Colborne in the third line role. Not sure why anyone would have wanted Colborne starting the season on the third line anyway. Anytime you can add a pretty good player on a cheap deal like that, you do it. Definitely fit a need on the 3rd line LW spot. Excellent bargain signing.

I don't get the fascination of people with prospects. Ashton and Colborne are good young players but they aren't close to Raymond's skill and experience.

When we have a young prospect with the ability to crack the top 6, he won't be blocked.

Raymond @ 1M is robbery.

Outstanding pickup, can't believe we got him so cheap. Really good 3rd liner, who can play well on the 2nd line too when we have injuries.

We have our high-end skill guys like Kessel, Kadri, Lupul and JVR, but we also have a lot of versatile players who each add their own element, and can slide up and down our line-up like: Raymond (speed and skill with reliability), Bolland (intensity and two-way play), Clarkson (physicality, leadership, net presence and decent shot), Bozak (face-offs, good hockey iq, breakaways and shootouts), Kulemin (Size and strength, two-way play, excellent board work), McClement (Elite two-way play).

Those types of middle-six glue players really help you grind out wins through injuries and slumps (and suspensions). I really like our depth this year.

Raymond has looked like a top talent everytime he's on the ice.

Reads the play so well, great playmaker, tremendous speed, and he's been nifty + isn't afraid to show his physical side.

Hopefully he can keep this up and be a part of our team long-term.
