This is why you build a team like Boston or Toronto.

Yes, which is precisely why Borts should start over Engo. Engo is a reserve caliber player, that's it.

Borts fits that mold. He's big AND he can play.

I think realistically he's got to go at some point in the season.

This fighting is because DB is a dick and embarrassed the Wings, no respect.

Getting a little too pissy over a pre-season game, aren't you Detroit?

I don't follow the AHL closely so I don't really know what you're referring to there, but either way, it doesn't apply to the NHL. No regular NHL player is going to stop doing what he's paid to do because we have some useless oaf sitting on the bench. We've consistently had decent fighters on the team over the last several years and we've still had to watch our top guys take a beating night in, night out.

Honestly, I don't know what was less respectful, everything that transpired in tonight's game or Sid not shaking Nik Lidstrom's hand.

We are playing full 60 minutes, I take it with a grain of salt but I really like it. I feel so much better about our D than I did last year. Scuderi and also Bortuzzo making a real jump should be a great additions to our team. Donīt forget, there were times when we were happy for Douglas Murray and also Mark Eaton was there..

Jokinen looks really good now with Geno.
Very heady player.
Seems to know where Geno and Neal are on the ice at all times it seems. That was a slick little dish down the middle to Geno from the point there.

My starting lineup:

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis >it's gonna happen. no need for debating.
Jokinen-Malkin-Neal >Jokinen has looked best there. Him on the 3rd line would be a bit of a waste.
Bennett/Kobasew-Sutter-Kobasew/Bennett > i'd like to see Bennett taking shifts with Geno and Sid's line though. if Geno or Sid's line aren't going, insert the young gun in there.

I like dressing Zolniercyk on the 4th. First of all. He deserves it. And second, he's a guy that can jump up to the third and provide real energy when needed.

MacIntyre beat up an entire line (and goalie) in Springfield. He also beat up two Rockford players at once when they were going after a teammate.

I will grant that he is infinitely more likely to do that than to clear the crease of a big, physical player.

$2.3M is right around league avg (some good teams like the Blues and Ducks pay as much for their #6's) for a #5, and Niskanen was very effective last season as far as possession metrics go given tough minutes.

You know, Sill-Vitale-Z would be better AND tougher than Vitale/Jeffrey + Gladams. If THAT were the 4th line (and I know you're with me here already), then you could argue that the Pens lines collectively would have balance and make a whole lot of sense when you look at them as a whole. Make Adams your 13th forward.

Neither of those teams have as much budgeted for their top five forwards.

it worked fairly well for Toronto last season, but they pissed off a lot of teams. Buffalo and Montreal beefed up big time in the offseason to counter them, and you see the result a few days ago. I personally don't want to see the Pens built like that - to say nothing of the terrible moves Toronto made this offseason.

nice dialling up of intensity. hopefully a week at west point will solidify team chemistry

with all the ridiculousness happening with rest of the league, i'm just glad the Pens got through the pre-season games without any major injuries.

Oh I don't deny that there are great fighters or even intimidating figures, I just don't believe that guys like that contribute anything towards winning hockey games. But that's a debate for a different thread.

I would love that KIRK.
I wish Kuhnackl didn't get hurt too. I wanted to see him more this pre-season.

This team better sign Kobasew though. A speedy player with a nose for the net. Hopefully Sid has some pull there.

If Kobasew doesn't get signed, it opens up the real possibilty of Glass getting starts one 3rd line wing.

Niskanen - Bortuzzo looked pretty damn solid tonight.

Is there any scenario where we carry 8 d-men (7 guys on one-ways plus Despres) and stay under the cap?

Who thought that would be said?

Well, no on ice injuries.

Lose Fleury and Glass, get a cheaper goalie? Not realistically off the top of my head.

If Vokoun stays out and Zatkoff is the backup it's doable, ditching Glass and replacing him with Kobasew for less helps too.
