The Perfect Mix

Getting better, while still not winning.

This could be just the right equation, if-you-know-what-I-mean.

Oh, and...

U: Brad May's outfit. Seriously, it's the clothing version of a concussion.

Almost...

The Good -

- Miller.
- Getting back into a game they were again widely outshot in.
- Foligno at center. Sweet pass on Vanek's goal, lots of faceoff wins, and generally a good bit of wall work.
- Grigorenko with some decent hustle tonight, looked a lot better.
- Flynn giving up his body to start the play that lead to his goal.
- Moskau's prophecy of the Vanek goal.
- Ott with two breakaways in one game....

The Bad -

- ... and unable to get a shot on either.
- Blowing a lead late
- Taking too many penalties -- Larsson, looking at you bub.
- Widely outshot. Again.
- Grigorenko getting benched after making a bad dump in decision in the third. Come on, let the kid play. Live with the mistakes.

The Ugly -

- D-zone collapse seemed to be on the vets (Vanek not deep on #2, Leino/McCormick/Tallinder firedrill on #3).

Yep.

In a season that is going to be the start of a rebuild, I certainly can live with that effort.

Three shots in the 3rd period. Pathetic.

I'd like to say 2nd game of a back to back on a road trip but it is too early in the year and they are too young to be tired.

Sabres now have played more games than any other team in the league (13)....and have the fewest points (5).

Is that G, B or U?

Good

-Miller making sure the rope-a-dope shots against scheme almost worked.
-A workmanlike Pysyk performance helped to paper over a slightly uneven Ehrhoff.
-A steady performance from Ristolainen and Tallinder.
-Foligno throughout the entire 3 periods.
-Grigorenko appears to slowly be getting more involved in all three zones of the ice. I guess not playing with wingers with cement hands helps in that regard.
-Girgensons, in general.
-Pending where you stand, the tank got re-fueled after a night of misuse and abuse yesterday night.
-Ville Leino point sighting.

Bad

-Stupid offensive zone penalties.
-Stafford's channeling of the invisible man.
-Hodgson also trying to channel the invisible man.
-Despite the goal, a largely indifferent Vanek.
-Some bad passes by Ehrhoff.

Ugly

-Steve Ott and Breakways - a match made in hell.
-Does this team actually play with something that resembles a system? If so, I'm not seeing it.

With Flyer and Ranger victories, we are back in 30th. Pick which column you want that to go in.

NHL.com had 2, not that it really matters.

for what it's worth (speculation)

Regier and Devine watched the first period together from the scouts/players/coaches box... someone came, had a discussion with them at the end of the 1st... and they never returned...

anyone have info on scouts that were in tampa (from other teams)? seemed to be a small collection of non tampa/non buffalo people in the house.

Woodhouse seems to always have the twitter scouting scuttlebutt. A regularly reliable source has the Kings making a roster move to clear space for one of their kids. *shrug*

Send a message via AIM to Eichel15
Can't see LA making room for one of their kids having to do with Buffalo. They'd want to send out a veteran, which is of no use to us.

Thought Zadorov had another good game. Back to backs doesn't seem to faze him... Great sign.

Both Zads and Risto has some mistakes. Both had some great plays though. Nothing that shouldn't be expected at this point though.

Just finished watching the rebroadcast. Haven't read others comments:

Overall and underlying theme....This is the sort of thing that happens when 3 of your 6 D men are rookies..... (Understandable and a part of suffering growing pains....)

GOOD:
Ott - playing hard again. Best 2 games to date
Flynn - never takes a shift off, back checked his butt off....had an outstanding game. In the right spot for a goal (for a change)
Grigs - seems to be coming around and may be starting to hit his stride. Liked his competitiveness and puck handling/decisions
Miller - steady again - until the end
Good game from Foligno. NIce goal set up, physical all night. LIked him on a line with Grigs
Psysk - made a couple of mistakes but steady in most situations.
Ehrhoff - had a better game than of late
Great effort to take the lead by a team playing back to back nights

BAD:
Losing the lead in the 3rd (oh well...)
Myers - I have come to the (obvious to many) conclusion that we're paying him too much money. Had a hard time handling Stamkos in particular. Hesitant decision making
Ennis - terrible, just terrible... has no clue on what to do with the puck. Kills plays, momentum and surges
Leino - fairly invisible
Vanek - plays like he's only paid to score goals
Way too many penalties on the Sabres
Sabres unable to match Bolts level of puck possession. (TB checkers priority is to take away opponent's stick or play on the puck. Supporting Tb player picks up the loose puck. Not sure we ever figured that out.)
Overskates, fans, muffs, terrible passing and puck play, getting caught from behind on breakaways
D zone coverage on TB 2nd goal - Late reaction from Zad on St Louis skating thru the slot to the wesk side
D zone coverage on TB 3rd goal - Risto doesn't win 1 on 1 in corner then tries to play goalie on the shot (He was having a pretty good game up to that point.)

UGLY:
At times this team reminds me of last season's Avalanche team. Behind early, tie it up, take lead, then lose it. (TV pans to the dead panned face of Joe Sacco....)

I can't believe I'm saying this about the Sabres this season but losing the lead in the 3rd period (who woulda thought that would happen....) might actually turn out to be a positive learning lesson for the youngsters.

Myers has earned his paycheck this year...not even a doubt in my mind.

Backing your claim up with "had a hard time handling Stamkos" is hilarious ... Name a d man that doesn't have a hard time with Stamkos.

And Risto was tripped up on TB 3rd goal as he was heading into the corner.

Yeah Myers has been pretty good for most of the season. He's not my cup of tea but I can't complain about his game recently.

Had no issues with that game other than Ennis. What happened to this kid? Bring back the hair. If I were to guess who may get traded 1st, its Ennis. He has gone full Afinogenov, and you never go full Afinogenov.

I'd actually take him going Afinogenov

Not the Afinogenov at the end of his time in Buffalo. Those last 2 years were brutal to watch. What made it worse is Darcy just held on to him the whole time while he played 4th line or sat in the press box. Hope this doesnt happen to Ennis, Im sure there is a trade out there.
