What does Paul Holmgren have up his sleeve?

It doesn’t take a mathlete to understand that the Flyers are currently over the NHL’s $64.3 million salary cap with Chris Pronger on the roster....

...many expected the Flyers to simply make a “paper transaction” and send waiver exempt forwards Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier to the Phantoms for the first day and re-call them on the second.

That might not be the case.

“I don’t see foresee that happening,” Holmgren said Friday, prior to the Flyers’ final preseason game against the Capitals. “Chris will be on our roster on Monday when we file our roster.”

There have been rumors all summer that the Flyers would like to move a defenseman, considering their jogjam there and that they continue to say they are impressed with tryout Hal Gill.

So, as the title says, what DOES Holmgren have up his sleeve? He's surprised us all in the past, will it happen again?

His arms.

Just a hunch.

Seriously though. He'll go through LTIR moves and I think I read that Raffl might be going down for a while.

He's been training on his level 3 cap absorption spell this summer?

Overpaying for players and not getting a goalie who can actually help your team win it all!

All Flyers fans wish someone would take the time to do some math and realize with gervais and rose hill down for 1 day solves the problem

Was gonna say, is there ANY indication that Pronger won't be on LTIR?

He'll ride the same wave the Flyers have been riding since '05 - LTIR.

Quote:
Thee Philadelphia Flyers have a method that is unique to them to exceed the salary cap. They do not buyout players. Instead they permanently transfer them to the longterm injury reserve. Any player who has had a lengthy NHL career has some kind of recurring injury problem that can be played up and turned into a longterm ailment. This allows the team to pay out the injured player’s salary to a new replacement player. If the player was bought out, there would be dead salary cap space that couldn’t be used.

Mike Rathje is the best example of this. He last played 18 games in the beginning of the 2006/07 season and remained on the Flyers injury reserve until 2010 when his contract ended. Derian Hatcher spent the entire 2008/09 season on the injured reserve until his contract ended. Both of these players never played again and provided needed salary cap relief with their injuries.

The current Philadelphia Flyers exceed the salary cap with their longterm injury players. They have two players in Ian Laperriere and Blair Betts who are on the injured reserve and expected to never play again. Ian Laperriere has not played since the 2010 playoffs. It is highly unlikely that he ever plays another game and yet the Flyers keep him on payroll. Blair Betts has serious knee problems. The Flyers waived him at the end of training camp because he was unfit to earn a roster spot. Montreal claimed him on waivers and then returned him to the Flyers when his routine medical showed just how badly he is hurt. Their careers are likely over.

link
Add to the list Chris Pronger, and (depending how things plays out) Marc-Andre Bourdon and Eric Wellwood.

Why isn't he waiver exempt? This is his third season and he's played less than 160 NHL games. Does the year he played a bit with the Kings and in the AHL count or something?

Just a stab in the dark looking at their depth chart but the most desirable guy to move would be Talbot given his cap hit and current role with the emergence of young guys like Schenn, Read, Couturier and Laughton - don't see where Max fits

Ryan White for Talbot, Gervais is demoted for the 1st game

Perhaps a big trade with PHX (finally).

actually it looks like the guys from the flyers board made an error with schenn's stats when they entered it into the generator so he should be exempt

It's Dater so take it for what it's worth, but he just tweeted this:

Hearing a little chatter about Avs and Flyers possibly talking about a swap for a D-man. Might happen, might not

Meszaros to the Avs for John Mitchell and a pick makes too much sense not to happen...so it probably won't but...

Why would the Avs add? Mez' salary makes up for the difference.

Sorry to insult you...

Laughable is you thinking there will be a better offer for a 4th liner making $1.75MM for the next 3 years when the world knows Homer has cap issues

We've got our own Talbot called Moen and he has basically negative trade value unless we retain some $

If someone offered me a serviceable 4th liner making $700K who I could toss away at year end for Travis I'd jump on it

Avs - Flyers

@adater Hearing a little chatter about Avs and Flyers possibly talking about a swap for a D-man. Might happen, might not

Interesting, but keep in mind Dater has about as much trade rumor credibility as Eklund.

The difference is, it's clear when Dater is speculating ******** and when Dater is throwing out what he hears. In this case, it looks like he's actually hearing something. Whether or not anything happens we'll have to wait and see
