What would it take to get him out of Ottawa?

Probably more then he's worth. He's one of the few old timers on the team, is entrenched in the community and a massive part of the leadership core.

Worth more to the Sens then any other team IMO

In all honesty, you probably don't want him unless it's strictly for leadership purposes.

That said, Ottawa isn't trading him just because of sentimental reasons and respect.

Phillips has 1 year left. He'll stay in Ottawa and retire.

Disagree with all this. He has plenty left in the tank. I expect him to sign a 3 year deal worth about 3.5-4M with another team after 2014. Still a quality top 4 shut down D man and one of the best PKers around.

I disagree with that. I think he stays in Ottawa for about $2.5 on a one year deal or $4.5 on a two year deal.

He will see his minutes drop below 20 this season, he has some in the tank, and could get more $$$ and term elsewhere but he will want to stay in Ottawa, and the Senators will resign him.

Realistically Ceci is a year or two, or even three away, Gryba may never be as good as Phillips will be the next couple of years and Corvo is a stop gap. Borowiecki is not a sure thing and is likely never more then a 6/7 anyway.

Some Sens fans seem to always want Phillips gone, but he is still quite effective, is a leader and good teams have good bottom pairing D-Men. If Phillips is your 5th or 6th D you are doing alright.... And the $$$ to have a vet there is well worth it. I do think he will take a significant pay cut though.

I think Phillips will be let go. The leadership core remaining from the 07 Finals and that survived the re-tool(Spezza, Phillips, Neil) should all be slowly departing and leaving their place to the younger players(except Spezza). It will mean that our re-tool is complete if the team can compete with them gone.

Alfie is gone, we'll see how the team does without him. Gonchar is gone. Phillips can leave and be replaced by Methot, leadership wise. Neil should be gone at the end of his contract too.

As others have said, due to sentimental reasons, his charity work in the city, and mutual loyalty with the team that drafted him first overall and he's been with his entire career, he likely isn't traded. I too think he's resigned to a 2 or 3 year deal before hitting UFA, probably 2.5 or so per season.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that he was a finalist (along with Spezza) to be named our new captain, so he clearly still has a lot of respect with the team, coaching, and management.

But I am one Sens fan that will acknowledge his value to the Sens is more than any team would realistically pay for him.

Wow, that's insane. It feels like just a few years ago he was tearing it up for the Oil Barons.

Look at the first round of that draft. Phillips is has had the best career out of the highest ranked prospects that year.

I think he still has something left in the tank. Hopefully Ottawa keeps him around, guy can still play. Awesome bottom pair guy that can play all situations and sub in to the top 2 pairs when needed.

He was the Erik Johnson of the 90s.

Both were busts.

At most 2 years. If Ottawa goes to the finals again, or even conference finals, or whatever they're called he might come back. I don't see him willing to sign with another team.

He just opened a bar and brewery here and his wife is from Ottawa. I truly believe he will retire before he moves. His name value in conjunction with his bar will keep him making money here for years to come.

He's not worth that much anyway, the tanks almost empty. That being said, if you look at his draft class, I don't know how people can say he was a bad #1 overall pick.

Phillips will continue to be a valuable player for at least 2-3 more years. Don't see how people can say otherwise after his playoff performance last year.

I agree. Phillips always raises his game in the playoffs and is always steady. He's not flashy and doesnt put up points, nor does he throw big hits but he's rarely out of position and makes the safe simple play with few mistakes.

Perfect bottom pair guy.

Phillips doesn't have good offensive #'s but he's far from a bust. I doubt Ottawa trades him but a 2nd round pick in 2014 + a good defensive prospect would be the asking price.

Phillips wasn't a bust, he was just the 1st pick in what is easily the worst draft class of all time, possibly in any sport, ever.

Look at the 1st round in 1996:

1) Phillips
2) Andre Zyuzin
3) JP Dumont
4) Alexander Volchkov
5) Richard Jackman
6) Boyd Devereaux
7) Erik Rasmussen
8) Jonathan Aitken
9) Ruslan Salei
10) Lance Ward

... ladies and gentlemen, there are your top-10 picks of 1996.

Wait, what's that? Maybe the 11-20 picks were better? Let's find out!

11) Dan Focht
12) Josh Holden
13) Derek Morris
14) Marty Reasoner
15) Dainius Zubrus
16) Mario Larocque
17) Jaroslav Svejkovsky
18) Matt Higgins
19) Matthieu Descoteaux
20) Marcus Nilsson

Phillips is one of the top-5 players from that entire draft class. I wouldn't call that a bust.

Clearly Pierre Gauthier missed the boat by not taking the Volchinator when he had the chance.
