When did we have a player who made sense to make captain and then made sense to keep for more than 3 years? You'd have to go back to one of Briere/Drury. The issue here has been missing the obvious long-term captain, not how they handled the captaincy.

I doubt they're both gone. Darcy doesn't have that much balls.

The chances of Ott leaving at the deadline are very low.

I do like that Vanek has a C now, even in half-capacity. I wanted him over Pominville in 2011.

Exactly, it will be both again

Based on:
- Assumed cost/term being very easy to manage in the big picture (even an overpayment of 4 yrs @ 4 per is more than manageable)
- Based on naming him a co-captain
- Based on his statements of wanting to be here long term (doesn't mean much)
- Based on him being a player that management targeted to go out and get to bring in and change the culture
- Based on the desire of the team to be "tougher to play against"

I would throw in his homeboy Weber getting a 3 year deal, too.

Based on my reasoning of the situation. His contract should be easy to secure and it's very clear he wants to re-sign here.

Didn't really expect co-captains. Guess it could be a short-term thing until a young guy steps up to be a legitimate long-term captain candidate. I like that Ehrhoff got an A, and it's pretty interesting Rolston took Stafford's letter away from him.

This team could win the division by 4 points this year and people would ***** that they didn't do it by 8.

If the players in the room are ok with this decision, then fine. They're the ones it should matter to. Not us.

Glad it's over. Enough talk about this BS. Let's play some damn hockey and see what this team is made of.

At least we name 1 (or 2) Alternates and not 6 "Assistants"

Edmonton Oilers ‏@EdmontonOilers 24m
#Oilers have named Jordan Eberle, Sam Gagner, Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nick Schultz and Ryan Smyth Assistant Captains.

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC 9m
I didn't think it was possible, but the Oilers have more alternate captains than we have studio analysts

While I would have preferred a single captain, in the larger rebuilding picture, with developing the youth and probably sucking for a season or two, these are decent choices. Three vets who are respected by their teammates. Besides, leaders are leaders because they're leaders. Not because they have a letter neatly sewn on their jersey.

I like this more than when they named Pominville. Glad they stripped Stafford of the A.

I love the exaggerating dramatic posts by a few here. Good for a laugh. Thanks.

I feel the same. Not a big deal at all, but does suggest a lack of being able to make an adult decision. Grow up and pick a captain.

Sorry, they have a long way to go to earn back any goodwill. And on-ice performance is just a small piece of it.

They fail a lot worse in other areas.
