Do you mean roster moves like Backstrom and Rask -> Russian NT?

Fun game.

Biggest issue -- Caps are generating almost nothing at even strength. Look at our goals today -- lucky breakaway, Ovechkin face-off snipe, two PP goals. Nothing from actually outplaying the other team, except for a very short adrenaline push after a goal.. The 4-on-4 trouble is actually a good indication that as a team, Caps get outskated by a mediocre team, whether it's individual lack of speed, effort, or something else.

So overall it's offense with an asterisk. It's cool to see Ovi scoring again, Grabo making a great impression, and a deadly PP, but as a team, no signs of progress -- yet, let's hope.

Still, 5-4 games are heaven for reg. season watching!

You Russians are pessimistic, no one expected the US to be so dominant in Vancouver.

The Bad.

Calgary isn't that good (or is it just me thinking that?) and Erskine is already not reliable in his role. He's healthy, it's not the playoffs.

The Good.

It should be obvious. They (GMGM/Oates) should be aiming for somebody at the deadline.

If we are still in top-8 there is no need to rush a trade. The more time we have to evaluate younger defenders the better.

Also I think Klesla is lightly injured now

Not concerned about the goalies yet. Last year if was much worse in the beginning. Anyway, Neuvirth was ok other than his mistake behind the net.

I'm still hugely skeptical that Neuvirth proves better than Holtby over any reasonable sample, but if Holtby's going to do this slow-start thing then good on Neuvy for stepping up when called upon and hope he makes a battle of it.
As much as I hate to say this, but Hillen's injury might make this team better. Hillen - Carrick pairing was a disaster. Carrick is physically not ready for the NHL, and Hillen is not the type of player that can cover for him. Furthermore, Erskine was simply brutal tonight. This team needs to rethink its defense. I doubt Orlov would have been worse that Erskine and Hillen.

Strange that you didn't. "No one" is a big stretch.

I think their 5v5 offense has been fine. They just haven't been able to bury their chances as well at ES as they have on the PP.

Also, although the defense looks bad, many of the goals allowed the last 2 games would not have gone in if the goaltending had been even close to average.

Watched half of the game. You guys are going to love Grabovski. I was gutted when we bought him out. But he didn't fit in with our new more defensive system. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes back to his 30 goal self with you folks.

Agree to a point. I think there's been some unreal saves that had to be made because of defensive breakdowns though. Particularly against the Hawks. So I guess it kind of averages out. I really hope come the playoffs that Erskine is on the third pairing and we have something else figured out for the second pairing. Be it growth in a young player like Orlov or via trade.

the face off snipe was even strength. winning a face off which wasn't clean and getting the shot IS outplaying the other team.

Game reminded me a lot of the Hawks/Flames game last year in Calgary.

It's not like we're grooming the next great NHL goalie with either IMO, just serviceable starters you hope blossom. As long as we're not crapping the bed regularly and expecting the goalies to suddenly start stealing everything, I think Neuvy can hold his own. We better hope one of them can...

Yeesh, that was quite an adventure.

3 Up

+ Ovechkin looks like the guy we've been missing for 3 years.
+ Carlson was a monster
+ Dat PP. Insane.

3 Down

- Play in the defensive zone is a mess.
- Ice time distribution. Erat with 6:30 vs. Laich with 21 minutes+. Laich has clearly not knocked the rust off, and you've invested a lot in Erat. Play the guy. Wilson with only 5:52. He will stagnate with that little ice time.
- Holtby. While a slow start is expected, he's gotta tighten up. Pathetic performance.

Can't wait for that from Pens fans, so I can point the IOC randomly blood tests likely competitors multiple times before the Olympics.

That delay of game penalty was an ECHL-level play. No fore checker within 25 feet. He could have held it for two seconds and passed it all the way down the ice.

I've said I think he'd be a solid 3LD, but if the 2nd half of last season and the beginning of this season is any indication, I'm not sure he's got the quality for that. He's gotta pick it up.

Agree with the many hear. Erat needs to be on the 2nd line. Much better playmaker than Laich.

Erksine needs to be on the 3rd line pairing.

Bad luck for Hillen..almost look like he might have broken his leg.

Worth noting, not only is Laich on the 2nd line, he's also in the down low spot on PP2, not Erat. Ward is also on PP2 in the slot instead of Fehr.

Agreed that Erat should be on the 2nd line in Laich's spot, largely because the Fehr at center experiment isn't working. Put Laich at 3C between Chimera and Ward. Fehr can play 4LW until Wilson is sent back to Plymouth (they can't possibly justify keeping him up past 9 games if they're going to play him this little).

Also, wtf is with Brouwer trying to be a dangler all of a sudden?

If you're okay with Eric Fehr as the 3C, I don't know what to tell you. If anyone lacks a place on this team, it's Fehr, not Laich.
